Sens make offer to Schneider

While Bryan Murray said Andrej Meszaros will get a chance to play more of an offensive role, the search for the elusive puck-moving defenseman continues. Ottawa is believed to have an offer on the table for Ducks blueliner Mathieu Schneider, but the $5.75 million he's scheduled to earn next season would be difficult for the Senators to fit in under the salary cap.

You Leaf fans still want Burke?

July 10, 2008  09:10 AM ET

Mathieu Schneider, he be done in the NHL! He was running on fumes the last couple of seasons. Fumes from the $5.75 mil Burke gave hin in Anaheim!

Unbelievable! Maybe he can join Jagr and Emery in Russia!

I still can't believe Emery's in Russia!
I agree though, Schneider's done

No worries Spiny....Emery will be back in the NHL..right behind Eddie Belfour...lmfao!!

Maybe Otttawa could sign a few more over the hill D men. It will make it easier to play them this year...oh yeah, it can't get any easier than a sweep.

Did Belfour ever play in Ottawa?

July 10, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Chicago, San Jose (very briefly), Dallas, Toronto and Florida. No on the Senators

Maybe he should...

Gerber played a pretty good series against the Pens even though they got swept. If Belfour was in net, it would have looked like football scores.

If Ottawa has the money, they should go after other options. Schneider is jsut OK right now but his asking price is not.
I'm thinking about guys like Robidas or Daley in Dallas. Nashville's young defensive corps is plain awesome all around (it's gotta be if you can afford to loose Zidlicky just like that and not care).

Strange article. They can easily fit him under the cap. They dumped Redden's salary and they haven't had to dole out any serious raises to their top players. There's a shortage of available talent and the Sens absolutely need to sign someone on D. Might as well be him.

Replace one "has been" (Redden) for another (Schneider)?

July 11, 2008  11:33 AM ET

To answer P.G's comment, yea, I'd still take Burke but just don't bring Schneider back!

July 11, 2008  02:11 PM ET

Scheider is older but he's not washed up. Right now, Ottawa has a no-name, average-talent defense fronting a no-name, average-talent goaltending tandem, which equals trouble. They sure as hell need somebody. Schneider would fit nicely if the Sens can get him.

I disagree rhmf93 with your opinion about Ottawa's d-men' lack of talent. I think Philips, Volchenkov, Meszaros and Jason Smith constitute a quite reliable defense, They all seem to be good enough to accompany a true #1 d-man. I'm not convinced that Schenider is the guy who will fill that spot perfectly but on the other hand not many star players are ever avalable...
