Phillies, Cards interested in Bedard

The trouble with Erik Bedard is that he has battled an assortment of hurts and now has trouble going more than five or six innings. Seattle will have to try to get Bedard healthy enough to pitch deeper into games after the break if it hopes to maximize any returns for him on the trade front. Any serious returns for Bedard could depend on multiple teams competing for his services. The Philadelphia Phillies are said to be interested, while the St. Louis Cardinals are in need of arms as well.

This will tell us whether the Cards are serious about competing this year. Do they make a legitimate attempt to bring in the pitching we so badly need,

July 10, 2008  09:14 AM ET

I can't believe they posted this story AGAIN!

July 10, 2008  09:15 AM ET

I thought this looked eerily familiar...wow

July 10, 2008  09:35 AM ET

Cardinals and Phillies will be trying to outbid each other for Charlie Hough within a week.

July 10, 2008  09:38 AM ET

Wow...a pitcher who can only go 5 or 6 innings a pop. If he likes giving up at least 2 runs in the first inning, he'll fit right into the Phils rotation.

July 10, 2008  09:40 AM ET

I remember when Jason Grimsley was supposed to be the next Nolan Ryan.

July 10, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Let the Cards have him. They need more pitchers on the DL.

July 10, 2008  10:04 AM ET

This guy might thrive with Duncan in St Louis. I say they should go for it. I've read comments that he is soft and a bit of a malcontent, but we've taken on guys like that in the past that have thrived in the St Louis atmosphere.

July 10, 2008  10:17 AM ET

I'm not saying it needs to be Bedard; but, we need pitchers now or we're going to fade fast.

July 10, 2008  10:29 AM ET

We need at least one starter, and a LH pitcher in the pen. If we could get one solid starter to go with Lohse for July, we might be able to get by with Looper, Piniero, Wellemeyer, etc. Then if we were to get Adam and Carp back, we'd still be in decent shape.

I'm just not sure how much we can count on Carpenter, though. He's hardly pitched for nearly two years now

July 10, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Wainwright is certainly the most likely candidate to come back and make an impact; but, we can't count on it.

They say Carpenter is doing great; but, we've heard the same about Mulder for the last two years.

July 10, 2008  11:04 AM ET

I have more belief in Carpenter than I do Mulder.... but I just don't think we can count on having a Cy Young caliber pitcher even when Carp does come back.

July 10, 2008  11:05 AM ET

I wanted this guy before the season started. Moz had better get the wheels turning on this. I think he is a solid 7 inning pitcher as long as he pitches to contact and does not try to strike everyone out.

July 10, 2008  11:23 AM ET

This is a must sign for the Cards..

July 10, 2008  12:11 PM ET

A Must sign would have the letters M.U.S.T written somewhere on it...so I will have to disagree with you.

July 10, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Send him anywhere he wants to go - as long as it's out of Seattle ! He can also take Silva, Batista, Washedupburn with him. 4 out of the Ms 5 starters can't make it out of the 5th inning. Just like last year.
Bavasi gave away half the team (5 players) to get a another "bust" pitcher who can't get out of the 5th inning except maybe once every 4 starts. MLB is littered with so-so pitchers just like Bedard for a lot less money. Heck, Seattle has 4 of them and pays them extremely well.

July 10, 2008  12:47 PM ET

Superheat - I think he is a 7 inning pitcher if he is healthy, but I'd like to see them bring him in. He could be a steal for us for the next couple of years, if the asking price isn't too high

July 10, 2008  12:53 PM ET

they need more than this bum to contend with the cubbies

July 10, 2008  01:09 PM ET

We don't have to finish in front of two teams. we only have to finish in front of one of them. Once you're in the playoffs, anything can happen.

good luck getting him to pitch more than 6 innings. when he was with us in baltimore, he was always gassed by then, red in the face and huffing, like he just ran a marathon or something
