Celtics holding line on Posey?

With more names coming off the list of available free agents, it would seem the Celtics may have to dig a little deeper to retain James Posey. But as of early last night, there was still nothing imminent on that front. Posey's representative, Mark Bartelstein, said he hoped to have something done within 48 hours. But when asked if that was with the Celts or another team, he replied, "I honestly don't know." The Celtics would still love to have Posey, and according to league sources they are willing to spend the full mid-level exception, announced Tuesday as $5.585 million. But, despite talk elsewhere that they were ready to do the fourth year, the C's still appear to be trying to hold the line on that.

C's will not be able to sign him for the mid-level. They have to go above that amount to keep him. He is worth 6-7 million a year not 5.5 mil. Hornets is the best place for him right now. Hornets should offer him 7 million a year.

If Posey plays for the Hornets then you got a guy who can play defense against the best at his position. He will defend the likes of Kobe, T-Mac, Ginobili, Carmelo, Roy, etc. These are the guys to stop and the Hornets needs that.

If I was the Celtics I would make sure to keep Posey

July 10, 2008  08:34 AM ET

"He is worth 6-7 million a year not 5.5 mil."

They can't do that-
Mid level EXEMPTION is the key

and anyway- he is a back up. He helped the celts win, but he is a back-up role player

Posey will be a Laker guantee.

The Hornets should offer him $7 million a year? Are you crazy? I agree he would fit in with the Hornets, but he is not worth that much. OMG I'm so sick of this James Posey crap. He is a nice player off the bench. I know he is going to get a decent contrac t somewhere this summer. I have never seen so many players stealing money from NBA teams, the free agents this summer are incredibly overpriced.

This guy is equivalent to Bruce Bowen but w/ more offense. He has long arms and moves his feet really well. He has proven his worth. Celtics and Heat would have not won the championship w/out him.

July 10, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Posey is a great role-player, but he is NOT worth more than the midlevel exception.

Now that you mention it Guam, Spurs should lose Bowen and grab Posey. Yes, Posey is 31 but that's still 6 years younger than Bowen and I'd take a guy clutch playoff offense over a dirty player like Bowen whose on his last legs any day.

July 10, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Posey is worth it...... he stepped up whenever they needed it and played fantastic D. The Celts need him

July 10, 2008  10:12 AM ET

the celtics need the big 4. keep posey please. sacrifice more money. this guy is worth it.

Huh? Bowen has offense, but when you have Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili, when is he gonna get that many shots?? And besides, his shooting is incidental, as in his defensive prowess is the primary purpose he is on the floor. Any points they get from him is a bonus. Kinda like when Rodman played his primary role was defense and rebounding.

July 10, 2008  10:41 AM ET

As much as I dislike Posey...I think he'll be a Laker. Celtics can't afford him while keeping 3 massive contracts on the books.

July 10, 2008  11:20 AM ET

I like Posey, but I don't think the Celtics will be able to hold onto him.

This free agents market is being driven by availability and timing. Posey is one of the best players 'available' at this 'time'.

I predict he'll get a contract between $7-$9 mil. It's an overpriced market and the pickin's are slim.

July 10, 2008  11:50 AM ET

whatszzinaname
posey has other people to score for him also.

and he plays really good defense like bowen but he scores more than bowen. a bonus.

And I wouldn't give Bowen bg $ either.
- these type of players are around
Malik Rose, Najaraja, Bowen, Posey, OKAFUR, Turiaf

All nice players - team guys, guys you WANT on your squad.....
but not for big $
All BACK-UPs

July 10, 2008  12:07 PM ET

Golden State is stupid to be offering Turiaf the amount of money that they are for a role-player.

July 10, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Posey's price went up because Maggett-me went to GS.

July 10, 2008  12:21 PM ET

7 million is a steal for a guy like Posey. He is not just a regular role player. he makes things happen. That's why if he goes to the right team he will help them out.

JGB

All those guys that you mention makes more then 8 million. Why not pay a guy that is proven.

July 10, 2008  12:23 PM ET

If KG, PP, ad Ray cared about winning they would restructure their contracts so we can keep big game james.

July 10, 2008  12:28 PM ET

didn't realize that posey is 31 yrs old. don't blame celtics for being wary of too many yrs. at same time, teams that win have guys like posey.....if the c's don't give him best possible offer, someone else will. notice it's just championship contenders in the running? just watch him go somewhere else and win another championship.
