Wie needs win to avoid Q-school

Michelle Wie's 2008 season practically comes down to the next two weeks -- the Jamie Farr Owens Corning Classic starting today, followed by the LPGA State Farm Classic. This week's tournament in Ohio is especially huge for Wie. If she finishes among the top five players not otherwise qualified for the Women's British Open, she will get into the final women's major of the year at the Sunningdale Golf Club in England. However, with no LPGA exemptions left, Wie needs a victory in the next two weeks to get into the Evian Masters, an event in the French Alps that she calls her favorite venue. She has posted two runner-up finishes in four appearances there. That's why the next two weeks are so season-defining for Wie. It's obvious that Team Wie's game plan for this year after a forgettable 2007 was trying to get a nonmember victory or win enough money to earn a 2009 LPGA card instead of going through Q-School or playing on the Futures Tour, two unpalatable options for someone who hasn't lacked for amenities, including jet-setting first class around the world.

"Man, did she rip off NIKE or what?!"

Not really...Nike just made a really, really, really bad decision in throwing so much money at someone who had never won anything beyond "little girls" tournaments. Nike ripped itself off.

Nike took a gamble on Tiger too - it obviously paid off. But, Tiger had won three U.S. Jr. Amateur and three U.S. Men's Amateur titles by the time Nike signed him. So, he was at least a proven winner at the amateur level.

It looks like Wie reached her peak at an earlier age than her peers, but hasn't improved since, while other women in her age group have continued to get better. Personally, I think we saw the best Wie had to offer a few years ago; it's all downhill from here.

She's done!

When did she begin Dave? I don't why we are still reading articles about her.

July 10, 2008  01:16 PM ET

She won't make it. She can't handle the pressure of Q School. We will continue to hear excuses from her camp. Word on the tour is that she is extremely pampered, and the article mentions her jet set ways. She hasn't played well enough to earn the money she needs to keep playing, and when was the last time she won anything?

July 10, 2008  02:01 PM ET

Dave's right. Nike threw money down a rathole with this one.

She started out like she was destined for greatness, although she was never able to even win the women's amateur title. Then she did very well in the first few LPGA tournaments she played in - 4th in 2005 Samsung World Championship, 5th in 2006 LPGA Championship, 3rd in the 2006 U.S. Women's Open. After that things started to come unraveled for her.

I guess we continue to read and discuss her because we're gluttons for punishment, and, just as we do with a gory traffic accident, we just can't turn away from her.

Yar, where's all the rum...

I thought Wei was supposed to be the best thing since AOL 3.0 ?

Wie ???????????? Why ???????????????????

July 10, 2008  07:08 PM ET

So she used up all her exemptions on the womens tour eh? How about the mens tour?

Kidding aside, Q school is the best thing to happen to her. Either she will step up and find the hunger to be back on tour or she will fade away. In the mean time, there are a lot of other good young women golfers to focus on.

She IS better looking that 90% of the women's tour. If I'm flipping channels, I'd rather flip by her than 90% of the others.

By the time to you get to the LPGA channel she has already missed the cut so you won't see her anyways !!!
