Brand, Clippers tell different tales

One thing is certain: Elton Brand is now a Philadelphia 76er. How, exactly, he got there, was up for debate Wednesday among the Clippers, Brand and his agent, David Falk. Brand, who signed a five-year deal with the 76ers worth an estimated $82 million, originally received an offer from the Clippers last week for five years and $70 million, a deal that was delivered as a take-it-or-leave-it ultimatum, Falk said. "I wasn't angry, but I was surprised. You don't expect a team to give a franchise player an ultimatum. You wouldn't expect the Lakers to do that with Kobe Bryant. You wouldn't expect the Heat to do that with Dwyane Wade," Falk said. Countered Clippers Coach Mike Dunleavy: "After I supposedly gave him a take-it-or-leave-it offer, we raised the offer to $75 million and $81 million. They can spin this thing any way they want to try and spin it. The bottom line is, anything Elton ever wanted I did it for him. They stopped having communication with us more than a week ago." And finally, the player himself: "That was my intent to sign with the Clippers," Brand said Thursday. "But I'm not a lawyer. We need to make a deal. And in making the deal, it fell through."

That is so Hollywood of Brand........Go back on his word when he opted out to supposedly help the Clippers and when they signed, he shld have told Falk to "get a deal done, I dont care how you do it."

The thing a lot of people dont know is Brand could have recouped any money he might have lost by signing for a few million less in the movie business.......Brand and Davis are both involved in the movie business.......

Oooooooopppppppssssssssss.

When they signed Baron

I don't think Brand is a franchise player a very good second option like Pippen. Hard to take a duke alum's word after recient history with Boozer and now this. hope Brand likes snow and the city of brotherly love. The 76ers are one really good player away and some bench work away from being a serious title contender. In the east you never know what record will get you in the playoffs.

The Clippers are the Clippers. Enough said. Players are there for money not to win games. Once a player proves that he can play in the Clips team then it's time to move on to bigger money somewhere else. The Clippers is a farm system to make players get better. Once they get really good then they move on for bigger things.

Guam Baller is right. These guys are playing for the cash. As a guy who lives in the Philly burbs, I can tell you that Elton has all his wifes family here and most of his. With the birth of his first child around the corner, he stated that that was a deciding factor. Golden State actually offered more money, but he felt that the Sixers are closer to reaching the promised land. I don't know about that, but I believe him about the family.

Brand is getting smeared in the media. All those years being labeled a unselfish player and now this.

July 10, 2008  08:23 AM ET

Some of you people are like lame puppets... You take whatever the media says and runs with it... Now you can't trust Duke players because of Boozer and now Brand?? That is the dumbest thing i ever heard... Business is business... How many teams tell their players that they are gonna take care of them at the end of the season, only to not do it when the time comes?? You people are so quick to jump on a player when he makes a business decision that is right for him, but the team and owners get a pass when the totally screw people out of their livelyhood right?? Get a freakin life, and a clue!!!

are you serious Falk ?
Brand is a SOLID NBA player-
but he AIN'T franchise caliber
and with recent injuries- DEFINATELY not worhty of long-term max $

Oh well. Not suprirsed - the Clippers have always been Busch League when it comes to the front office.

Exactly jgb, as good as Elton is, the balls on David Falk, to compare him to Kobe, and d-wade...they both have championships...

Thanks for showing us your true colors Elton Brand. I thought you're the guy who was selling integrity and team leadership. You're nothing but a fraud and all the money Philly gave you, you still couldn't taste class even if it was turd stuck all over your front teeth. Good riddance and good bye Elton Brand. L.A. already have enough garbage, one less couldn't hurt.

July 10, 2008  08:58 AM ET

Dear Elton Brand,

Don't worry about those haters in LA. They are just taking out their frustration for sucking for so many years. You did what most people would do, you took the money. The 76ers are on the rise and have a good chance to make a run in the east. You'll make plenty of new friends on the east coast, but Baron Davis will not be one of them.

July 10, 2008  10:10 AM ET

According to the LA Times, "He did once vow to get the Clippers for not taking his client, Mike Bibby, with the No. 1 pick in the 1998 draft."

July 10, 2008  10:13 AM ET

I don't think Brand had as much to do with this as Falk does. Sterling has been a penny pincher, but he opened the bank to sign Davis. Coupled with:
1) Brand talked B-diddy into joining him and with that in mind I
2) find it hard to believe that it was his intention to leave all along.

I think Falk was "representing" his own interests and kind of steered Brand to Philly. Brand and Dunleavy have always been pretty straightforward about things, but Falk has always been suspect. If Falk tells Brand, "Hey, they only want to give you $70 mil. That's an insult... they don't want you, they don't appreciate you, but I can get you more and a team that *does* appreciate you" and then Falk "forgets" to tell Brand the Clips have been calling, Brand is convinced that it is now time to move on.

All water under the bridge, now, but don't skewer Brand on this. Falk has been heavy-handed and shrewed for years. Nothing has changed.

July 10, 2008  10:41 AM ET

whats77inaname...

You can't completely absolve Brand from this situation. He's a grown man and he made his own choice. Falk can tell him whatever he wants, but the ultimate decision still comes down to Brand.

July 10, 2008  10:48 AM ET

This has to be the strangest and most controversial signing of the year so far.

I would have bet money that Brand wanted to stay in L.A. , although I can appreciate the family in Philly issue. Many ball players have family that live elsewhere.

The difference between $81 mil in L.A. and $82 mil in Philly is negligible. There's something unsaid here.

July 10, 2008  10:56 AM ET

Ok i don't get this. If Dunleavy DID value Brand, why come up with a lame 70M offer first, and wait to raise it when Brand tsarted to get calls with his actual worth? If the answer is, that's business asusual, then Clips got what they deserve. Brand made the BEST available decision for him regardless of whatever he said she said. he fits in Philly well, get more money, and in East coast, almost assured of playoffs. Its a no Brainer. Mike Dunleavy doesn't have any leverage or a moral high ground to bad mouth Brand. So **** old man

July 10, 2008  10:58 AM ET

I thought Brand had opted out to (allegedly) free up some space for the Clips to go after a big name.
