Cubs likely to move Marquis

If the Cubs have another area of need to address this month before the non-waiver trade deadline, they're still looking for it. ''You never get out of the mind-set that you might still try to do some things that make you better, but you also don't want to be in the mode of, 'We've got to keep adding guys,''' general manager Jim Hendry said Wednesday. ''Let's not forget we've got seven guys in the All-Star Game and we just added a high-end starter. And guys that aren't going to the All-Star Game have done a real good job here.'' The Cubs seem more likely to move some of their pitching depth, such as Jason Marquis, if they do anything at all.

I hope this is true, but I think we would have to pay a team to take them.

July 10, 2008  09:17 AM ET

Thankfully there is that precedent of players for straight up cash

grossedout looks like he typed during an epileptic seizure.

July 10, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Yes, he does

July 10, 2008  10:05 AM ET

If the Cubs get rid of a loser like Marquis, they will take a huge step toward winning the division.

July 10, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Not only that but he took the time during his seizure to finally make the statement that this is a crappy site. Makes you wonder if he was having a seizure and doesn't like the site, why he took time to even comment.

Now, as far as the article goes...this is a tough division this year. One team makes a move and the other counters with their own. Love to see the competition in this division this year. What is it, the top 3 records in the National League are in the Central? That's awesome.

I really don't get Cubs fans' hatred for this guy. He's your fifth starter, if he wins 10 games it's a luxury (and he's over half way there).

Look at it this way, if you move him and Marshall gets hurt again, then what? Rich Hill? And when he can't find the strike zone again where do they go?

Suddenly pitching depth turns into a frantic search for a 5th starter.

July 10, 2008  10:37 AM ET

I don't like Marquis as much as the next guy, but they made need him for insurance. Z + Harden both had DL stints, Dempster hasn't pitched serious innings in 4 years. On the otehr hand, if anyone wants that contract...

Maybe they feel comfortable Gaudin could fill in if necessary.

July 10, 2008  11:07 AM ET

The Cubs have the deepest pitching in baseball as far as I'm concerned.

July 10, 2008  11:08 AM ET

I can't speak for the Cub fans, but my personal dislike for Marquis comes from his whiny, excuse filled 3 years in St Louis. The guy was maddeningly inconsistent, and was terrible after the AS break each year. Inconsistency wasn't the issue though, it was his attitude and failure to accept responsibility. It was NEVER his fault that his pitched poorly, it was always someone else's fault. Then in 2005, though his Aug/Sept ERA was about 8.5, he whined incessantly about being taken out of the rotation for the playoffs. I think the guy is just a loser, and a cancer, and any team is better off without him. It's addition by subtraction.

July 10, 2008  11:39 AM ET

I agree with others about this guy being a whiner. I wasn't thrilled when the Cubs picked him up but we needed some pitching help.

Still though, whiner or not. Bad contract and all, we need to hold onto pitching for now. Offense is key but pitching wins you titles. And teams with an abundance of pitching usually fair better come playoff time. Look at the White Sox a few years ago. The offense was good but their pitching and defense made the difference and I would happily challenge anyone that would say different.

Now if the Wiz (Jim Hendry) can pull something off and bury the player and contract. Great! If not, it's not going to kill us to have a pitcher that could at least be .500 in the 5th slot. Big Z, Harden and Dempster will form a formidable combo. And then having Lily and Marquis won't hurt.

GO CUBBIES! Chi-town Series! World Series Champs over White Sox in 6 games!

Do it! send him down to AAA or trade him

July 10, 2008  01:23 PM ET

Prisonmatt07, we hate him because he sucks, has single handedly lost us games that we should have won, whines too much, and gives ultimatums to his managers. I don't appreciate it when some jackass says "Start me or trade me" and he gets no punishment to speak of! Instead Piniella APOLOGIZES?!?! To this prick? WHY?! It was Marquis took the first swipe. It was Marquis who put this organization in a bad spot. And it was Marquis who hasn't shown that he actually belongs with this organization.

Also, let's not forget the fact that he is beyond abysmal in the second half. Historically, he has a good first half, then forgets how to pitch in the 2nd half. But the kicker is that he didn't even get off to his good start this year. He decided to suck outright. Do not let his irrelevant win streak deceive you. He has 37 walks, only 49 strikeouts, and a horrid 1.48 WHIP. He's not a rookie who is trying to get acclimated to pitching in the Majors. He's a veteran, and thus has no excuse. He has rarely pitched well this year. And if history is any indicator, things will only get much worse very soon.

Finally, I don't like the fact that he rarely takes culpability for his actions. If he sucks, then he should be a man and say that he did not play the way he should've. Do not throw the team under the bus. He pulled that **** in ST. Louis. And he has pulled that **** here more than once. I am getting at the point where I want Marquis to be put in any deal for a starting pitcher. Hell, we'll pay THEM to take him off our hands. We still have the pieces. We can make a deal for Burnett. A return to the NL should do him good. The way I see it, it would be a win-win situation. We would then be rid of Marquis, have Burnett (whom has already stated that he'd like to play for us,) and then the rotation would have to be at least 2nd best in the MLB. We already have Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly, Harden, Gaudin (he can sneak into the rotation,) and young Marshall, who should be allowed to get more experience. I already salivate at how sick this lineup is. Add Burnett to the equation, and that is just filthy.

Tenrings nailes it with his inconsistent remark. The Cubs are in a unique position. They need to do something as far as pitching (who doesn't) but they don't have to give up the farm at this point. They can holdout for a buyers bargain with the staff they have.

July 10, 2008  01:49 PM ET

the headline should say Cubs likely to move Marquis...to the minors

July 10, 2008  02:17 PM ET

Wow cubs/bears...that's a whole lotta hatred right there.

Personally, I'm a Sox fan. I remember what it was like when the 5th spot in our rotation was a revolving door with crap coming out on all sides before '05, and the same may happen to the Cubs if they're not careful.

The Cubs are in a position to do something special and sacrificing a serviceable 5th starter b/c he's a little prickly isn't really wise IMO. Then again, I don't have the personal venom toward the man you do so I guess my thoughts are moot on this one.

July 10, 2008  02:20 PM ET

Cubs/Bears, I hear ya....you echoed some of the same themes I said about Marquis. I'll just add this: I've been a Cardinal fan for a long time, and I have NEVER been as happy to see someone leave as I was when Marquis left after the 2006 season.

Prisonmatt, trust me, the Cubs are better off without him.

July 10, 2008  02:51 PM ET

Well in that case I'd prefer they keep him : )

July 10, 2008  03:08 PM ET

Yeah, me too.
