Phillies getting closer to Burnett

The Philadelphia Phillies interest in A.J. Burnett was established long before CC Sabathia and Rich Harden were traded but now the Toronto Blue Jays have reciprocated, dispensing J.P. Ricciardi's top personnel advisor, Tony LaCava, to Reading, Pa., to scout the Double-A Reading Phillies. Phillies officials met Thursday morning, but there is still real concern about Burnett among their upper echelon after his near-meltdown Wednesday night against the Baltimore Orioles and because of his high ERA. The Blue Jays, like most major league teams, covet Phillies outfielder Greg Golson, the organization's first pick (21st overall) in 2004. Sources say the Blue Jays have also zeroed in on the Los Angeles Dodgers, and have had people at games involving their Single-A Great Lakes Loons affiliate.

I doubt Burnett will be a good fit in Philly

July 10, 2008  04:04 PM ET

He has got some great stuff when he is right....hope he doesnt go to the Phillies...

July 10, 2008  04:12 PM ET

yeah that's exactly what the dodgers need , a walking bandage in burnett. apparently coletti has not learned his lesson from the other overpriced dodger pitchers that are currently on the D.L.. meanwhile the ones that are performing for the dodgers have to pitch perfect games because if they give up more than 2 runs in the game they will lose ....When will we get a real difference maker with the bat ???? "earth to coletti please respond"

I think the Phillies are the worst. So what if they made the post-season last year, as for A.J. Burnett, I doubt he will get dealt to an NL team. They just don't think he is worth alot. In all, a trade will happen, just not with the Phils, or any NL team for that matter.

July 10, 2008  04:30 PM ET

Logically, of the two teams mentioned, the Phils would be best served by Burnett, an inconsistent pitcher who, when on, can shut down almost any formidable lineup. They could kinda, sorta afford to take a chance of him with the solid bullpen they have and a lineup that can put up lots of crooked numbers.

The Dodgers don't need pitching; they need power bats.

Mulder just reoccupied our last position on the DL so we can't use him.

The difference is that Carpenter and Mulder both had some extended high level success. This guy has always been more promise than high level success.

I 'tip" my hat again to an astute B.Ball guy !!! Burnett never became quite the pitcher Beckett has become and forget Willis (for now) from their days with the Marlins !!!

Pat Gillick,

PLEASE do not trade for AJ Burnett. His control is terrible, and who knows if he can stay healthy. You never know what you'll get with him on the hill. I'd rather you let the pitching staff stick it out this year because Burnett will not contribute anything that the Phillies don't already have. J.A. Happ just might make it this this year. He pitched a solid 6.1 innings against a strong Cardinals lineup yesterday. Doesn't that mean anything to you?

Another piece of advice: DO NOT under any circumstances trade Greg Golson. He's the best offensive prospect you have right now, and he could be the next big thing in the majors. I'd rather you try to pull off a sign-and-trade with Burrell this offseason for some REAL pitchers. You guys can afford to lose Burrell, for all the money he's going to want. You know what it takes to win; you won 2 rings with Toronto. Just pull that same kind of magic with the Phils and you'll make me and a lot of other people very happy.

The Great Lake Loons?

July 10, 2008  08:38 PM ET

Why is every pitcher out there on the market damaged goods? Buyer Beware!!!!

July 10, 2008  09:40 PM ET

Every time I see Burnett pitch, he's lights out.... well, so it's against the Braves.... but obviously the guy has issues.... his stuff is top 10.... fragile body though, maybe like a Kerry Wood.....

July 10, 2008  10:52 PM ET

It is time to stop referring to Burnett's stuff as "electric" or "overpowering". His agent must be issuing those statements. This guy is a career .500 pitcher. Pitchers that lose as many games as they win do not have "electric" stuff. Pedro Martinez and Randy Johnson in their prime were the real deal. Burnett is a joke that wilts under pressure and has no brain for the game. The only thing that sets him apart from Carl Pavano (another career .500 pitcher who tricked a club into a huge contract) is the injury bug. Both guys are complete frauds.

July 10, 2008  10:54 PM ET

They both have the bug joec. Pavano just has a bigger bug, probably because he got a much bigger contract.

July 10, 2008  11:56 PM ET

This guy is Toronto's Carl Pavano, except he pitched a few more innings. I'm glad he turned down the Orioles, he would have been their 2nd Wright (another Yankees brick).

July 11, 2008  01:01 AM ET

Get outta Toronto Burnett ! get your grossly large salary off the books you bum ! Your tease is tiresome and it's some other teams turn to watch your punk a_s_s fail !

July 11, 2008  01:21 AM ET

Although I'd like to drop AJ now, when the Jays can actually get something for him, I don't think it will happen because of the recent injury to Dustin McGowan, and Shawn Marcum. Since Parrish is already up, the Jays minor league options are thin.

.""This guy is Toronto's Carl Pavano, except he pitched a few more innings. I'm glad he turned down the Orioles,..." Yeah I agree that he's injury prone, a career .500 and has command issues, but at least he has SOME sucess, especially considering his division. He has a no-hitter under his belt, and he owns the Red Sox. Pavano will go down as one of the worst signing in sports history. Burnett? Not the best signing by the Jays brass, but no where near the mistake Pavano was.

July 11, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Phillies need to give JA Happ another shot on the mound, I can't believe they are sending him back to AAA after the 2 starts hes had. Both times Charlie left him in too long.

If Happ can come and fill it the second half of the year as a decent starter, you can throw Myers back in the pen like he wants and Trade Flash (might be as hard as trading Wes Helms)

July 11, 2008  12:49 PM ET

They are only sending him down so he can stay on a schedule. His next start with the Phils wouldn't be until July 23 or so. They don't want him sitting that long.
