LaRussa asks Cardinals' GM to make move

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa urged the front office and ownership to "use every resource we can" to improve as quickly as possible, citing the Brewers' trade Monday for Cleveland Indians righthander CC Sabathia and the Cubs' acquisition Tuesday of Oakland A's starter Rich Harden and reliever Chad Gaudin as "not the best news we've heard this year if you're a Cardinal fan." La Russa was not comforted by recent front-office suggestions that the expected return in August of starting pitchers Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright from elbow and finger issues would offset those deals. His statements Wednesday come as general manager John Mozeliak insists the club will not reflexively answer moves by its rivals, especially for pending free agents or so-called rental players.

This may explain TLR starting Mulder.

Oh this is your answer front office, let's see how it works out. The doctors tell me he's as good as he's going to get. Let's see if that's good enough. It makes the most sense to me. TLR calling the front office on their public bluffing.

I think you're right. I think TLR put him out there yesterday to prove a point.

I hear Jason Marquis may be available...

July 10, 2008  03:10 PM ET

That's not even funny, prisonmatt........

July 10, 2008  03:20 PM ET

He is right.. this is huge... if they want to do anything this year or have any chance... gotta make a move now.

July 10, 2008  03:28 PM ET

You're dead on, drj.

July 10, 2008  03:29 PM ET

Yeah the last time LaRussa was crying about the GM going out to make a trade they went after Mulder giving up 2 great stars in the making in Daric Barton & the ace Dan Haren (someone might have heard from him.) LaRussa needs to stick to what he is good @ & that's managing & stay out of the front-office. The Cardinals cry they are small mkt when they won't go out & sign a player, they always want tot rent a player paying him only for half the season well, what does that do it depletes your minor league syst. Also Tony has a way of getting GM's fired after his urging to get Mulder, Jocketty was blamed by the Cardinals for having a weak farm syst. Well, let's look @ all the trades he has made over the yrs: he got Mark McGwire, Jim Edmonds, Adam Wainwright, Larry Walker, Ronnie Belliard, Edgar Renteria(trade?), Scott Rolen, & maybe a few others but if you get those guys over the yrs of course your minors will be weak b/c you can't usually get players for nothing unless you are the Padres & you are trading for Jim Edmonds @ the end of his career!! ha. Will the Cardinals get any draft picks if Mark Mulder can't ever pitch again or would he have to sign w/another team for that to happen??

Jocketty was fired for his horrible mismanagement of the farm system and drafts. Check that, he lost control of the fram system and draft because he made a mess of it. He was fired because he was shopping himself to other teams after losing control of the farm system and draft.

July 10, 2008  03:47 PM ET

With the exception of Haren, very few of the prospects Jocketty traded for the names you mentioned have gone on to have significant ML careers.

July 10, 2008  04:02 PM ET

Hope they do something soon!!!

July 10, 2008  04:47 PM ET

talk about being between a rock and a hard place. This whole quandary is a direct result of the team's Half n' Half philosophy at the beginning of the season - competing and rebuilding. Had they chosen one or the other, we wouldn't be in this situation.

LaRussa hates to lose, so his reaction is no surprise. This outta get interesting...

July 10, 2008  04:47 PM ET

Forget about it Tony. You have the third best team in the division and it is going to stay that way. Luck is going to run out the way it did last Semptember!!!

July 10, 2008  04:48 PM ET

The Cards have to do something. With the Cubs getting Harden and the Brewers getting C.C...., the Cards can't compete against those two teams. LaRussa's right..., the GM has to pull the trigger on a pitcher soon. I hear Burnett's available.

Beeotches Brew

There it is. We need to make up our minds and do it now. The only thing I ask is honesty. I can handle a rebuilding year; but, don't feed me anymore mulder and Carpenter are coming to save us crap. They are sounding like Dusty Baker on Wood and Prior.

Are we going for it or not? I'm on the fence about it personally so I don't think giving up our top prospects for a rental is in our best interests.

July 10, 2008  05:17 PM ET

I don't know what to think. But LaRussa thinks we can win it all now - and unless he's had 2 bottles of wine and a whiskey chaser, I'm inclined to go with his gut instincts over a first year GM's.

July 10, 2008  05:26 PM ET

Good point, he wasn't calling for big moves last year.

Kind of leads me to suspect all isn't really well with Carpenter and/or Wainwright as well.

July 10, 2008  06:00 PM ET

I would like to see either Gil Meche, Derek Lowe or Roy Oswalt in a STL uni. All three of their teams are fading and as much as we need a lefty starter, with Bedard going to the DL there are no other arms that I like as much as these three.
