Jags owner denies selling team

Jacksonville Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver is refinancing debt, considering taking on a financial partner, and struggling to sell tickets and secure a stadium naming rights deal. Despite the problems, he said his team is not for sale and is not going anywhere. "I just wanted to . . . clarify that I'm not selling the Jaguars," Weaver said yesterday in response to a report in yesterday's Daily News, which said Weaver was negotiating to sell to billionaire C. Dean Metropoulos, who might consider moving the team to Los Angeles. "The team is not moving to LA," Weaver said. "I don't know how I can say that any more clearly than that. Everybody wants me to sit here and speculate on the future. I'm not going to speculate on the future. At some point, maybe I would sell the team, but not now. Whatever happens in the future, I can assure you one thing: The Jaguars are going to be the Jacksonville Jaguars." Despite his denials, the Daily News cited other sources with knowledge of the situation who said discussions between were being brokered by Sal Galatioto, of the New York sports investment firm Galatioto Sports Partners. Galatioto has brokered the sale of several pro sports franchises, including the Washington Redskins and the Phoenix Suns. Comcast's Ed Snider hired Galatioto a few years ago when he was exploring the possibility of selling the 76ers.

I'd be rioting in Jax if that ever happened.

So I wonder what the name for our new team will be. Leaving the previous team's heritage behind and starting up with a new name is all the rage these days.

I can't wait to see this stadium complex. Billionaires who like to throw around their money are some of my favorite people. Conversely, billionaires who cry and move teams when cities won't build stuff for them should have the crap kicked out of them.

how about the LA Losers?

July 11, 2008  12:03 PM ET

How about the LA GangBangers
Or LA Riot
Or LA Gringos
Or The Los Angeles Angels of Ananheim Calfornia
Or LA Illegal Immigrants
Or Compton Killas
Or SouthCentral Convicts

I love the brain challenged LA haters who obviously watch too much Fox News. Why not just change the name for the current fanchise city to:
Jacksonville Seat Tarps
Jacksonville Blackouts
Jacksonville Not A College Football Team
Jacksonville Will Play For Stadium Sponsor
Small Market Ho-Hums
By the way, anybody who takes he word of an NFL owner at face value, especially one who is about to lose his pointy collar, fine pressed shirt, we have some ocean front property for you...in South Dakota.

July 11, 2008  01:28 PM ET

How about...
LA Turders
LA Lards
LA 'Tards
LA Crackheads
LA Hodaddons

Reality is... Jacksonville Jaguars are staying in Jacksonville, Florida
LA imaginery team playing in an imaginery stadium for imaginary fans is staying in LA... imaginary LA..... Los Angeles had their shots and blew it everytime... why will it be any different??

July 11, 2008  01:39 PM ET

The reality is that Jacksonville is hardly an armpit and the Jags are real contender in a tough division.

The people of LA don't even want a team. I go there at least twice a quarter.

Nobody cares.

The Dodgers and Lakers have some real fans....but most are mindless bandwagon jumpers.

July 11, 2008  02:02 PM ET

Los Angeles Jaguars, anyone?

Spaceman Spiff | 07/11/08, 10:28 AM

We'd much rather have an expansion team, but the Jags are a reasonable alternative.

Bandit77 | 07/11/08, 01:39 PM

Totally false, the fans just don't want to pay for a new team.

Haters living in at least one of America's hell-holes.

July 11, 2008  03:05 PM ET

Boring stories about who is for sale... Unless the team plans on moving away from the city the are in because of this I dont think anyone really cares

July 11, 2008  07:42 PM ET

Just ignore the "Century 21" signs. Please drive through.
