League will test new Giant
Posted: Friday July 11, 2008 05:45AM ET
One of the potential problem spots on the Giants roster was their depth behind starting offensive tackles David Diehl and Kareem McKenzie. That issue was resolved yesterday in an interesting way, as the Giants agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Shane Olivea, a talented player with a troubled past. Olivea, 26, is in the prime of his career but the Chargers released him in February, even though he started 57 of 60 games in his four years in San Diego. The NFL last month suspended Olivea for the first four games of this coming season for violating the league's substance abuse policy. That could have dissuaded the Giants from going after Olivea, but the suspension was rescinded yesterday by the league because of what his agent, Kenny Zuckerman, called "a clerical issue." Olivea had appealed the suspension, explaining he missed a scheduled drug test because he had already checked himself into a treatment facility. The league will continue to administer tests to Olivea. He will become the newest member of the Giants, as long as he passes a physical examination and completes a workout.

The NFL drug policy should specify the drug that was used. There is a big difference between someone caught smoking a joint (recreational) and someone caught juicin' (performance enhancing). Publicizing the specific substance could help deter use as the media would have a more focused story to concentrate on. It would also more appropriately shame the player and expose what 'drugs' are being used in what sports.

Report Offensive CommentI'm torn on this. Bringing someone into the organization who was almost suspended for violating the substance abuse policy can be trouble. The positive thing about it though is that he checked himself into a rehab center, so he noticed he had a problem or he's just smart and figured a suspension was coming, so he got out of it by doing this. Either way, hopefully he can get clean and it will work out in the Giants favor.
