Tigers in no hurry for trade

It doesn't appear Tigers officials have engaged in heavy trade talks. The Padres are one known seller, but the Tigers have yet to inquire about right-hander Greg Maddux or left-hander Randy Wolf, according to two industry officials. Maddux, whom Jim Leyland has long admired, has a full no-trade clause. Wolf can block a deal to 14 teams, including Detroit. It's believed both would like to stay on the West Coast. The Tigers might try to upgrade their bullpen. Team officials previously have had interest in Pittsburgh left-handers John Grabow and Damaso Marte. The teams had trade discussions this season, before the deal that sent right-handed reliever Denny Bautista to the Pirates.

Pudge will be off of the books next year, and the way that Renteria is playing, he may not be back either. Last I heard, K-Rod of the Orange County LA Angels of Anahiem and surrounding environs had not signed a new deal. Since everything that Todd Jones throws up there these days gets ripped, we need to throw some dough at K-Rod. Oh, and don't tell me the the next great closer for the Tigers will be Zumaya.

The should be in more of a hurry to close out a game they are ahead in the 9th first...

To say the least, something is gonna have to be done about the closing role. Todd was not the answer since he came to Detroit. The man was just a band-aid. It's way overdue that Detroit fix the closing problem, we can't afford to lose anymore games in the top, or bottom, of the ninth. I hear Barowski is out there now...
Oh god, I just said that...

Stick a fork in the Tigers, I think they're done.

It really doesn't matter, you're still in Detroit!

Slow down Detroit Free Press. Maddux has yet to even come close to uttering a word about wanting out of San Diego. Plus, if you look at the details of Maddux's contract, you'll realize he may not want to go to a city not exactly known for its great golf courses.

Getting 'huffy', Jim Leyland is?

July 11, 2008  03:29 PM ET

Do not bother with old man Maddux and his variety of slow pitched junk balls. If he ever pitches in the playoffs again he will fool no one and get shelled.

EastCoastKeith, you obviously have never been to Michigan, nor do you know $#*^ about golf. Michigan has been ranked the 3rd or 4th best state for golf for several years. They have some of the country's top public golf courses as well as some very prestigious and nationally recognized private clubs. Not to mention the Buick open every year at Oakland Hills.

Detroit is only 7 games out right now, and Minnesota and Chicago both have holes. The Tigers need to get another starter and some bullpen help, and go for it. Remember the Cardinals in '06? The Tigers are better than them, aren't they?

July 11, 2008  10:51 PM ET

They weren't in '06. :)

The Tigers are FINALLY back in the race. Not a good time to disrupt whatever chemistry they have now -gotta wait things out for a couple of weeks.

TiCal07, are you trying to compare the golf courses, landscape, and year-round climate of Southern California to the state of Michigan? Come on now...
