Phillies-Jays trade brewing?

With the Phillies still actively looking to upgrade their pitching rotation, one name that has bubbled to the surface as a possible acquisition is Blue Jays righthander A.J. Burnett. Toronto's director of player personnel Tony Lacava recently spent a couple of days at Double A Reading scouting various prospects. The Blue Jays are known to have interest in acquiring a shortstop, and Phillies prospect Jason Donald has drawn some interest from teams around the league. Catcher Lou Marson and outfielder Greg Golson are two other players who interest the Blue Jays, although the Phillies are reluctant to give up Marson, who could fill a need in the big leagues sometime in the near future.

This guy would upgrade the Phils rotation right? Right. What does that say about the rest of the staff?

Hmmm...3rd best staff in the NL. What does that say about our staff?

You don't think AJ would be an upgrade over Adam Eaton?

Nothing against AJ, but as a Jay fan, it has been ffew too many years of watching him underachieve! With what we are paying this guy, he should have a better record! Granted, the run support is not there, we are only hitting a .218 with runners in scoring. But at the same time, when you need a big win, you cant really count on this guy! I would like to get something for now, not in the future! Been way too many years of REBUILDING!

ANYONE REMEMBER RICCARDIS 5 YEAR PLAN! LMFAO

It depends on what the Phils would have to give up. AJ would be an upgrade but not a big enough one to give up a whole lot for.

Unfortunatly for the jays, it seems pitching is coming pretty cheap these days around the league!

So dont get too worried even if something was to happen!

I'm not arguing that AJ is not necessarily worth the money that he is being paid, I'm just saying that he is an upgrade over starters currently in the Phils rotation.....like Eaton.

July 11, 2008  02:04 PM ET

Eaton hasn't pitched that badly this season....He's had 1 or 2 bad starts....but other then that he's kept them in the games he's pitched....I don't know if Burnett would be an upgrade.....his ERA is crazy high....the run support doesn't mean diddly if you can't keep the other team off the board....but who knows....

It's the 3rd annual Cito Gaston yardsale. Take two players off his hands and he throws in a classic Roberto Alomar bobblehead.

I thought his contract ran thru 2010, no? I was thinking it was 5 years beginning in 2006, but maybe there was an option on the last year.

There is an opt out clause for the last two years of the contract.

According to ESPN the plan for Burnette is to opt out if he does well the rest of the way no matter who he's with. So if he does well, he walks into an even fatter contract next year. If he stinks up the joint, you're stuck with his already fat contract for two more years.

I'd think long and hard about trading for this guy.

No A-Rod still holds that distinction for the same reason. It's ten years unless I can get and even bigger **** load of money after seven years.

July 11, 2008  05:18 PM ET

JD had a similar contract with the Dodgers.

Well, CardsFan2, that being the case, I would say we shouldn't pursue, and we definitely shouldn't give up Anderson or Rasmus. Now if Toronto would take Duncan even up for him.......I'd still go for it.

July 11, 2008  06:27 PM ET

You really want to be rid of Duncan.

OK, I say we send Duncan to the Jays in a straight up deal for Burnette. Get it done Mo.

July 11, 2008  07:42 PM ET

I wouldn't mind, but I'm not totally anti-Duncan. I just hate the Defense and he strikes out so much.......but I don't totally hate him. RHater can't stand him...he just wants him gone.

But I would totally do a deal of Duncan for Burnett.
