NHL fends off Russian threat

The NHL reached an agreement with a new Russian hockey league Thursday that temporarily ends the threat of players being lured away by big-money offers. The pact to respect player contracts across all borders followed offers made last month by teams in Russia's Continental Hockey League - which begins play in September - to entice Evgeni Malkin out of the final year of his deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was reached at a meeting of the NHL, the NHL Players' Association and international hockey leagues in Zurich, the home of the International Ice Hockey Federation.

Frankly, I'm not surprised this happened.

On a side note, it goes to show that hockey players aren't as greedy and their professional counterparts. Malkin turned this league and 12 million a year down to stay with the Pens.

Maybe Malkin knows what it's like to live in Russia. I would prefer the States also, if given the choice. Maybe Jagr is going back because he has the market cornered on snowblowers.

On another note, isn't it great how the Little General has saved us from the Russian threat? My hero!

Operative word in the paragraph being temporary.
Napolean saves the day again!

malkin fled from the country in the middle of the night to escape. why would he go back a year later? lol

letsgopens, i agree with you on the statement about other professional athletes. while there are some greedy ones in the nhl, (hossa) i think if a league like this existed in the nfl, mlb, or nba, you'd see alot more people heading over.

The Russian league is only "poaching" has-beens and never-were's anyway. The NHL has nothing to worry about in any time in the near future because the Russian "super" league is a glorified ECHL at the moment, much like the old WHA. Players realize that the NHL is the cream of the crop, and only players nearing the end (Jagr) making one last paycheque, or players run out of the league (Emery) have turned to balmy old Moscow.

I mean, some NHL teams like Nashville, Buffalo and Edmonton have trouble recruiting UFAs because of perceived weaknesses in lifestyle... imagine the recruiter responsible for luring guys to the beautiful suburbs of St. Petersburg?
Siberia anyone?

No shock here..

steelcurtain,
How can you say hossa is greedy? He's greedy to win a stanley cup. Wouldn't you want all players on your team to have that mind set?
