Montgomerie barks at gallery

Much as most of us like this Colin Montgomerie, there is a well-established game among the press corps that might loosely be termed Watching Monty Bark At People. The rules are skewed unfairly against him and always in favor of us, in as much as tournaments require a great reserve of intense concentration, which inevitably leads to a golfer getting brassed-off by some disturbance or other. In Montgomerie's case, these moments are ten-a-penny. "Haow!" he hollered yesterday from a green towards a BBC sound-man some 70 yards back up the fairway, who was busy pacing out the distance of a drive by Angel Cabrera, who was booming along in the group behind. Seconds later, Monty fluffed his 4ft birdie putt and, inevitably, squinted back up the fairway at the felon who had put him off.

Golf fans are pretty much down in the mud with NFL fans. The drinking along the fairways has become more important than watching the players and hoping to see genius shots.

Anyone who shouts "in the hole," should be escorted off the course by security and committed to directly to a mental ward. If these idiots don't understand that golf requires intense concentration, they don't deserve to be loose in society.

I don't blame Monty, and Tiger gets just as angry, but fans are less likely to do it to him because they know there might be consequences. Major morons. Shame, really but there really does need to be a code of conduct for fans, instituted. It is another example of the disintegration of the respect for others in American society.

A 4 foot putt does not take that much 'intense concentration'. Monty should pick his spots a little better.

I love it when Tiger flips out on people for taking a picture... Happy Gilmore and Tin Cup never did that

July 11, 2008  04:13 PM ET

Yes, Football Guru, and Happy Gilmore and Tin Cup were ACTORS, not real players. Really, you didn't know that?

And Yoda, buddy, a 4 foot putt certainly does require a lot of concentration, especially when its worth a few hundred thousand dollars. Don't believe me? Try this then. Go to your local muni course. Bring the title to your home with you (assuming its worth a few hundred thousand dollars). Put a golf ball down on the green 4 feet from the hole. Then invite someone to yell in your ear as you attempt to make the putt. If you make it, you keep your house. If you miss it, though, you give your house away. Would you take the bet? If you wouldn't, then shut the **** up about PGA pros wanting as little distraction as possible while they're playing.

How do you pronounce "HAOW?"

July 11, 2008  06:11 PM ET

man, the big tuna just can't wait for football season to start, can he!

July 11, 2008  07:35 PM ET

FLGL, if I already owned 15 houses and had 30 million in the bank I might do it.

The BBC guy was over 200 feet away. Unless he was directing a live orchestra, how could he have been that much of a disturbance?

July 11, 2008  08:06 PM ET

True, DamoFo, I'm just saying the pros don't want distractions. Distractions, like noise and movement, can seriously affect their performance, even on short putts (which Yoda doesn't seem to get). And they have a lot riding on the line, more than any of us ever will.

Don't get me wrong-- I wasn't defending Montgomery. He gripes about everything; real noises, imagined noises, birds flying over head, birds flying 30 miles away, you name it.

July 11, 2008  08:22 PM ET

FLGL, my house comment was more in jest than anything. I know some folks want quiet to concentrate, but I think it's absurd how some of these guys go bonkers over the sound of grass growing....Or (birds 30 miles away)LOL!

July 11, 2008  08:36 PM ET

I hear you, DaMoFo. No offense taken either. In truth, a lot of these pros would be better off if they had the level of concentration Tiger has. As a kid, his father tried to strengthen his concentration by distracting him during his swing (by yelling, dropping clubs). He still gets po'd on occasion when photographers snap pictures during his swings, but his ability to concentrateis certainly better than a lot of pros (Monty included). Maybe they could learn from him.

We do something similar with our gymnasts. We have them run sprints to get them breathing hard, then have them perform their competition routines with loud music playing and their team mates yelling at them. Best way to simulate the stress of a competition.

montie is a long-time whinner and cry baby. I have watched him a number of times being an ****... which is what he is; and a choke.

July 11, 2008  11:35 PM ET

okey, i meant to say he was a donkey...

July 12, 2008  09:46 AM ET

Neut,

The FootballGuru has a valid and, as it happens, really important point: you NEVER see the media speak ill of Woods no matter how much show-boating or bad behavior he displays. Someone else does it and they are fair game for criticism. Woods does it and nothing. You never see anything in print or on TV which is critical of Woods. That, my friends, is hypocrisy in action. I call it the George Washington syndrome: can't show anything untoward of the man.

Golf journalists are spineless and completely dull-witted.

this cry baby comes over here and gets filthy rich in this country and
all he does is complain and cry about all the bad treatment he gets.
they should deport his **** and give a real reason to complain.
send him back where he belongs.
