Olson done with 'one and dones'
Arizona Coach Lute Olson said Thursday that his program's loss of standout prep basketball player Brandon Jennings to a European professional league had convinced him to adopt a new recruiting strategy. "It's a situation now that if someone's a 'one-and-done,' we're not going to pursue them anymore, no way," Olson said from his Tucson office. Olson, 73, a basketball Hall of Fame member who guided the Wildcats to a 1997 NCAA title, labels the so-called one-and-done situation a "farce," and is pushing for reform as a member of the National Assn. of Basketball Coaches. Olson suggests that elite prep players be given a choice: opt to declare for the NBA draft immediately after high school, or be committed to spending a minimum of two years (Olson would prefer three) in college.

I agree with you on that one! He better get use to those one and done's unless the NBA decides to get more strict (which they won't) about the draft policy. It's not about graduating from school anymore for these kids, or even going to school at all, it's about the million dollar status. Fact is that if a kid is gifted enough to be able to be a lottery pick in the NBA draft and have a chance at obtaining millions of dollars they will take it without question. I look at it as a once in a lifetime deal. Take UNC basketball for an example, we will have PLENTY of recruits that come in on a one and done basis but i'm ok with that because they are exciting to watch and they keep the wins coming. Thats what it's all about, winning and money! I'd love it even more if some of these players decided to stay all four years and graduate but I like to look at the facts! So if Lute wants to go about it that way then thats cool, these will be his last few seasons as the head coach of Arizona basketball!

I totally support getting rid of the current rule. I like the idea of having players stay at least two years, but could go directly out of high school to the NBA.
I, actually, do not want players that only play one year to be recruited fro my team, They are not need for a successful team. Look at past champions:
2008 Kansas: Zero one-and-dones
2007 Florida: Zero one-and-dones
2006 Florida: Zero one-and-dones
2005 UNC: Marvin Williams as a sixth man
2004 UConn: Zero one-and-dones
2003 Syracuse: OK, so Carmelo was important for this team
2002 Maryland: Zero one-and-dones
2001 Duke: Zero one-and-dones

As much as I agree with him, it needs to be pointed out that the dude is 73!!!!
He, himself, may be "one and done".
And while you're at it, Lute, go ahead and push for coaches to fully honor their contracts and for NCAA sanctions to stick to the coaches and not just the schools. Nothing is more unfair than when a coach screws up (Kelvin Sampson, anyone?) then leaves with the school (and the players he leaves behind) to pay the price.

would be great if all coaches shunned the players who do this until the NBA changes their policy either back to the right out of HS (which it should be) or that you a kid has to play at least 3 years in college before before being drafted. The one and done is NOT good for college basketball.
A kid should be able to decide to go right from HS to the pros. It's his life. Besides, let the NBA deal with them and not the colleges.

I agree with Lute on this. Give them the option of declaring immediately or make them wait for a couple years to be able to declare again. I could be wrong, but I think a couple other sports allow this to occur. I think baseball allows players to be drafted from HS, but then if they choose to go to college they can't be drafted again for a couple years. I think hockey may have similar rules.

What the NBA really needs to do is develop a quality farm system like MLB has.
You could have 4 farm leagues, one in each region of the country. These farm teams woulc be contracted with NBA teams in that region of the country. You could expand the NBA draft and players drafted could be assigned to a minor league team for that organization, similar to what baseball does.
This would help eliminate the college basketball is the farm system for the NBA issue that is going on right now.

*chapmaya* No disrespect intended, but that's the purpose that the NBDL was intended to serve, except that it falls under the very same rules as the league itself. The inevitable response is what Brandon Jennings did which I don't think is a bad decision at all. I'm sure that some will disagree with me on this, but when you consider the fact that the N.B.A.'s most recent European imports were/are not much older than Brandon Jennings, it puts a whole other perspective on things and sort of makes the N.B.A. a league of hypocrites. Think about it... (Andrea Bargnani - 19, Danilo Gallinari - 19, Darko Milicic - 18). In our society these kids would just be getting out of high school as well. Why can't they wait a year? Oh that's right... they're playing professionally in Europe. Now tell me how much more experienced and well schooled in the game are they, versus Brandon Jennings? Degrees of success notwithstanding.

it's tricky, because if you think about it, how do you justify telling a 19 year old kid that he has to stay in school instead of taking the job of his choice? pro/college sports are the only realm where adults don't have freedom of choice. i say if you are old enough to be tried as an adult, sent to war and be financially responsible for self, then you are old enough to sign an employment contract of your choosing. let's face it, this is a system set up to save the nba the expense of having to develop its own players.

I am so sick of all these coaches whining about 1 & done....
they are trying to turf the real problem....
This is not 1975....
there is CABLE TELEVISION now.
He dosn't NEED to go to the top 4-5 schools- that used to be the only ones which gave exposure to get noticed
so now.....if a kid isn't going to start DAY ONE he ISN'T coming to your school
whether there is 1 & done or not....
you can't have 6 kids on your bench that would 'start' anywhere else anymore....they don't NEED you anymore.
One and done is GREAT for the NBA.
it IS good for college OVERALL as well- just not good for the traditional powers
who used to be able to lock these kids up-
why do you think the coaches than whine about it are from Duke, Arizona, etc....
because they are losing the picks of the litter.

So now Lute doesn't like the system huh? Don't be fooled here, the first chance Lute has at getting a primo player he will be all over him like white on rice. Then after the kid leaves we'll here the usual excuses. Point is, Lute will do anything to win, including going back on his word, again!
