Dodgers GM's future in doubt

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt has glowing opinion about the job his manager, Joe Torre, has done, but won't discuss the future of general manager Ned Colletti. McCourt would not discuss Colletti's future, saying, "I think it would be unfair to point fingers, it doesn't do anybody any good." But after two years of bad luck and bad decisions, Colletti's shaky tenure was clearly rattled again this week with a story that spoke of either chaos or subterfuge. In a report in the Daily News, sources told veteran scribe Tony Jackson that McCourt had killed a proposed deal for Cleveland Indians pitcher CC Sabathia because of money concerns. McCourt was initially angry because, after funding baseball's seventh-highest payroll at about $118 million, how could he be accused of pinching pennies? "That I would kill a good deal for money is ridiculous," he said. But the bigger issue is, who would have given that information to Jackson in the first place? If it came from within the organization, which is likely, then either somebody is trying to embarrass Colletti or embarrass McCourt.

For all we know the source could have been a peanut vendor, or another reporter.....

I miss the days when I was not potty trained...there are so many people on this web site who deserve to be pooped on...

Perhaps you will find throwing poop to be more your speed, also within the parameters of your species.

this clown (coletti) learned the ropes from the worst g.m in the league (sabean).
The mccourts have to fire colletti, put in logan white which scouted our top players and knows how to evaluate talent , and give him time to make a difference along with the core of young players we have. And hopefully in the process add some power to that lineup that we desperately have needed for several years.

PLEASE git rid of him...just about every signing he's made has been horrible. Jones, Schmidt, etc. I'm sick of how this org is run...wasted money on already passed prime players, VERY expensive tickets and unnecessary stadium upgrades, ZERO balls. At this point, he can't make the team any worse. Pink slip pretty please.

I would think both McCourt and Coletti would be more embarrassed by the way the team is playing. There is no consistancy on offense or pitching. Way too many injury prone players, or bad investments, ie, A.Jones. Get someone who can hit and pitch.

Well, DUH! As a Giants fan, when Coletti went to the Dodgers, we all said, one down, one (Brian Sabean) to go.

July 11, 2008  01:17 PM ET

The Dodgers--no matter who owns 'em--seem to have a mental block about finding a dominant 3rd baseman, putting consistent power in their lineup, and sitting a savvy GM in the front office.

Let's pray McCourt handcuffs Colletti until after July 31--it's unlikely he'll be fired mid-season and we don't want him doing something desperate in trying to salvage his sorry tenure in the big chair.

To 'rjf': I totally agree except to say that the only "ropes" he learned from Brian Sabean were nooses.

The Dodgers don't need pitching. They had the lowest ERA in all of baseball in June and went 1-17. Colletti was right not to pursue Sabathia. The Dodgers need some power in the line-up. Larouche, who is overrated, IMO, can be dangled. The Dodgers will have plenty of money as Kent, Garciaparra, Penny, Furcal (possibly) and maybe even Lowe figure not be signed. All you guys with 20-20 hindsight were so happy when the Dodgers spent mightily on pitching in the free agent market, only to spend $160 on Kevin Brown and Darren Dreifort. Develop your own pitchers and trade or buy proven everyday hitters. (Matt Holliday?)

I missed Schmidt's 25.2 IP for the Dodgers, so it must have slipped my mind.

Ned Colletti is a solid baseball man. He has hit some bad luck, I understand all his signing (except Schmidt) at the time they were made. He did not go crazy and trade Kershaw or Kemp or Loney or Elbert, which he could have, to save his job. Every scribe in the US was aplauding hiim for getting AJones for a short 2 year deal. Hind sight is easy.... McCOurt would be wise to stick with him for a couple more years, in baseball luck changes.
