Selig to Giambi: Talk or else?
By asking Jason Giambi to cooperate with Senator George Mitchell, Commissioner Bud Selig is apparently trying to appear to be a disciplinarian while also offering Giambi a way to avoid a possible punishment. If Selig announced a stern punishment yesterday, it would have in effect told players that they could be disciplined for being candid. It might have also ruined the slim chance Mitchell has of getting players to speak with him in an investigation that is now 15 months old.

I can't believe Giambi could get in any real trouble. Didnt he admit to using the juice like 2 years ago after the BALCO thing leaked? How can he possibly be punished for admiting to something that he already came clean about? This is all because he wanted MLB to apologize. That being said I kind of hope he sings like a canary.

How cheap is this of Selig? He really doesn't know what to do with Giambi so he's trying to strong arm Giambi into talking to Mitchell in hopes Giambi makes the decision for him. I agree with Damon...what's he being punished for? Freedom of speech and telling the truth? I won't say I agree with what Giambi or any of the players did in using steroids but at least he has told the truth throughout and has faced the situation with the truth. Maybe that is what scares Selig?

Any of you familiar with the criminal justice system can see what is going on here. They see in Giambi a potential inside witness and hope that if they can sufficiently threaten his livelihood that he will roll over on Bonds.

I'd love to see this stupid commissioner follow through on his threats... Unless Giambi test positive now, or he's stupid enough to say he's took stuff after testing began... This guy has no backbone whatsoever and the players association will hammer him if he tries to suspend Giambi!! Selig has to go....

Excuse me? When did this become about "white boys"? So Barry Bonds and Gary Sheffield were just framed, is that it? What the hell are you even talking about?

So they are going to punish the honest guy who kind, sorta apologized while Sheffield, Bonds, Clemens (oh c'mon, you know he was on something, he was implicated many times) & co. carry on and get paid top dollar.
At this point Selig could screw up a wet dream.

I have never thought admitting you did something should absolve you any any responsibility or blame.
Giambi is a piece of crap, but all of you are even worse for defending him or even calling him a hero
Yeah thats why he got caught with amphetamines last year. Great guy

Giambi deserves to be thrown under the bus for his illegal steroid use as much as Selig does for his ****-poor handling of this scandal. A confession from Giambi doesn't make him any less guilty. Criminals who confess to their crimes still get punished for it because IT'S A CRIME THEY STILL COMMITTED! This man cheated the sport you guys love and basically robbed you by signing that huge contract while he was doping (fans help pay for salaries) and you still defend him. Giambi slept with the devil and so deserves all the hell he's gonna catch. Ban him and these other dopers from baseball.

Apparently Selig never heard of Ex Post Facto. You can't punish someone for breaking a rule before it became a rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MCG - You should do your homework before you make race an issue here..I guess you haven't followed the case surrounding the shock jock (Ismus), after he made a statement about a girl???s basketball team..He was tried, and convicted in the media...Furthermore, Al Sharpton, made it his personal crusade to have his job eliminated.....I still think that shock jock was wrong, so don't think for one minute that I approved of anything that guy said...He was wrong and paid the price for his poor statements.
Last time I checked, both Barry bonds and Jason Giambi have received some equal lashings from the media, which shows that it doesn't matter if you are black, white, hispanic, or anything else, you will be tried with some type of equality.
Unfortunately, MLB does not view all situations the same way or with the same type of boundaries. That is a travesty to the sport, and Bud Selig is the cancer that allows this to happen. Giambi will not receive any type of suspension (like Barry), and the fans will see how management views these situations.
Your statement is unfounded, untrue, and disgusting...People like you making statements like that, only divide this country..At least understand what you are reading before you make senseless comments like that..
And by the way..........................I hope you have a very positive day.

The fact that Congress has spent 15 months worried about MLB players juicing says more about their priorities than cheating... what about the war, immigration, etc? If fans turned their scrutiny towards the corrupt politicians, this problem would probably go away, but the owners being such the PAC donors, and wanting to keep the lid on players' salaries, despite doubling league income to $6 billion a year, will keep the screws on the players, and ultimately, remove any objectivity or judgement baseball fans themselves might have on the individuals who chose to take the game to a higher level... homeruns put butts in the seats, and then the owners want to slap the hands and stifle the very livlihood of the game... politicians, you have bigger concerns, owners quit being so greedy, and players--- PLAY BALL, and let the fans decide whether you are worthy!

I'm not shocked that the Yankees came to his aide...again...and the guy cheated playing the game. A-Rod cheated on his wife and hes thrown under the bus. I'm used to this by now in NY...but its obvious how much they think of the guy. This is a man who cheated baseball of its innocence.
And on a greater level, Bud Selig and the owners cheated this game of its innocence long ago when they allowed these elaborate home run chases under the shadow of performance enhancement. Every owner should have to speak to Mitchell and tell him why they're innocent too.
This is a joke. Giambi is in no real danger unless he tests positive for something. I'm sick of this topic. And Bud Selig might be the ugliest man ever born.

Good posts tom and Chi-town.
I was not trrying to take up for Giambi so much as point out the hypocracy of the situation and the overall poor job done all-around on this issue under the "leadership" of Selig.

What? He violated the steroid policy, so he should be suspended. If Players are alowed to plea bargain out of the punishment then why have any rules in place. Also If a no name player got cuaght they would not get the same "plea bargain: as giambi got. If baseball wants to get rid of steroids then they need to act when the rules are broken, and with no delay.
