01:36 PM ET 07.11 | The Diamondbacks and Cardinals are among the most ardent pursuers of Pirates star outfielder Jason Bay, SI.com has learned. The Mets and Rays, who also seek an outfielder, are among other teams thought to have checked in with the Pirates. Pittsburgh also has emerging star Xavier Nady, yet another fine outfielder, as a potential trade target. "There's been a great amount of interest in a couple of our right-handed hitters,'' Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said on Thursday, apparently referring to Bay and Nady.

This... this would be awesome. A lineup of Ankiel Pujols Bay Ludwick Glaus would be 5 guys hitting 30 homers but it makes no sense. The Cards already have a crowded OF and unless your trading Ludwick or Schumaker you have no where to put him. Also, why would you trade your only leadoff hitter or a guy thats gonna hit 30 HR 100 RBI anyway....

the story goes on to say the Pirates are interested in Colby Rasmus... still, the deal makes no sense because unless Bay can play short or you move Ankiel back to the mound theirs no where to put him.

WAIT! I GOT IT! move Skip Schumaker back to his natural position of middle infielder, he was drafted as a 2B after all....

I'm probably the only guy in St. Louis willing to trade Rasmus for Bay.
I've seen too many can't miss prospects fizzle to pass up a young proven all-star. Bay would give us 3 solid 29 year old outfielders. 29 is a great average for your outfield.

If the Bucs trade JayBay, I'm never going to one of their games again. Nady, I'm not so attached to. Also, why would they trade him within the division?
Neil Huntington seems to be a decent GM, so hopefully he keeps at least one player we Bucs fans can identify with.

Miles/Ryan can lead off. It's not great; but I'd make the trade off to get Bay batting behind Pujols.

Yes that makes a whole slew of outfielders, including Schumaker, available to be traded for pitching and middle infield during the off season.

This trade would make perfect sense for the Cardinals... yes there outfield is crowded but they are in desperate need for another right handed outfield bat. Schumaker and Duncan are both lefties and neither one has much power this year. Mather is definitely not the answer. Bay would fit perfectly in that lineup... more protection for Pujols and Ludwick.
However, to give up Rasmus would be stupid... this is probably just a fix for this year and would still leave room for Rasmus down the road.

Bay's cheap and under contract through 2010 so it's not a one year deal. I agree with you CardsFan2, remember Ricardo Rincon and oh yeah Reyes is untouchable.
Thing is though, Miles and Ryan in the leadoff just don't cut it, Schu's a very underrated player, 55 runs, 33 RBI, a little pop, and nearly a 400 average against righties. Plus he's basically a rookie. The Bay trade just doesnt make sense unless you plan on trading Schumaker and or Ludwick elsewhere... which still doesn't make sense. Idk, maybe theirs something I'm missing here but i think pitching is the number one.

I like the Bay deal because I see it as stratigic. Any tactical trades for pitching at this point will hurt us long term. I've not given up on this season; but, I don't want to make long term mistakes in order to go for it.
We've needed a legitimate clean up hitter for Pujols since Edmonds and Rolen began their decline. I think Bay fills that need quite well.

I think I'm the second one, CardsFan2. I would move Rasmus to get Bay. I'm simply not sold on Rasmus as the future star they are projecting.
I would prefer though, to move Duncan and/or Schumaker. I hate to surrender Skip, but I think long term it makes more sense. Then Miles could lead off, and maybe that would make Tony play him more instead of Kennedy, which should be happening anyway. I agree it would weaken our leadoff production, but I think it still makes sense.
I think Bay would be a perfect fit in St Louis, and I'd be happy to see them work this deal out if the price isn't too high.

Where would they put him? move Fukudome to CF and bench Edmonds or what?

The Cardinals do not need Jason Bay. Ludwick, Duncan, and Ankiel can get the job done. This is just a case of the team being worried about Milwaukee catching us for the wild card. We can't lose more good prospects regardless of how old or proven Bay is.

The problem is we don't need Bay's bat and definitely don't need his big salary. Yes he is only 29 and headed for his prime but if they commit money to him by trading for him it limits the team next offseason.

It's a good point c note. I have long thoght Bay would look great in a Cards uniform, but I am also concerned about the off-season. I want them to do what they need to compete and contend this year, but I want to spend on pitching in the offseason.

The last week convinced me that a legitimate clean up hitter is a critical need. We haven't scored runs in more than a handful of games in weeks.
We are all but wasting the best hitter in the game. He needs more protection.
I like Bay because I think he will be a very good fit on the team and in the city. I think he can be turned into a true blue Cardinal just like Walker became a lifetime Cardinal after a year and a half. I think we can sign him long term. I can't say that about Holliday and others who are available.

Agreed.....I've always thought he would fit with the city and Cardinal Nation. I think he and Fuentes should probably be our primary targets, and then we will hope like heck that Adam and Carpenter can solidify the rotation.

This is just stupid. We NEED quality lefthanders in the bullpen, not a big bat in the outfeild. We've already got two of those, and why would you mess up a good thing. The Cards need to be looking at Brian Fuentes, not Jason Bay.
