Sources: Favre reneged on return deal

Brett Favre had his chance to come back to the Green Bay Packers at the end of March, but the legendary quarterback reneged on an agreement then to unretire -- part of the reason why the Packers aren't now welcoming back the legendary quarterback. According to two NFL sources, Favre informed the Packers during the annual NFL meetings in late March -- less than a month after his tearful March 6 retirement news conference -- that he wanted to play again. FoxSports.com's Jay Glazer first reported that information Friday afternoon. The State Journal's sources along with Glazer's sources said that, at the time, Packers coach Mike McCarthy and general manager Ted Thompson told Favre they would welcome him back, and plans were made for him to return -- a colossal commitment to a player who had just publicly said he no longer wanted to play anymore, wiping away tears while saying he didn't have "anything left to give."

Hey Brett, come on over to NASCAR, we got guys that retire all the time, come back and do 3 or 4 farewell tours for different teams all the time!

It's just a game where guys happen to make a lot of money. Let him play if he wants to play, let him retire if he wants to retire.

July 12, 2008  09:17 AM ET

It's just a game. If he wants to play, everyone should welcome him back. If he wants to retire, everyone should wish him gl in his retirement. Go away? What is that all about? And I'm a Bear fan.......

July 12, 2008  09:35 AM ET

Let him come back. He's still the best option they have at QB. I would have hoped he was smarter. Since he's not, let him go out on his shield. The Packers should give him the chance to leave like Troy Aikman, Steve Young, and Joe Theismann, INCPACITATED and nearly DECAPITATED!

July 12, 2008  09:35 AM ET

What would you do if your emplyer kept asking you, "so, when are you going to retire? we need an answer. When are you goijng to retire?" Sounds like Mr. Favre didn't really have a choice. And now the Pack is pissed? give me a break.

I'm suprised more Packer backers are not requesting him! Did they really see something special in Roger's few appearences? I didn't, and after being 1 game from the superbowl, it's going to be a long year with those same expectations.

July 12, 2008  09:42 AM ET

Why doesn't he stay retired. Look at this. People everywhere are saying hes so good, went out on top, should have stayed. If he would have retired two years ago things would have been different. He's had one good year in his last three or so. He needs to just leave now and go out on top like hes wanted to for all these years.

July 12, 2008  09:52 AM ET

THIS IS A BUSINESS!!! You cant put business plans on hold for 1 guy!!!! He makes 12mil, the Packers have to resign Ryan Grant, Greg Jennings!!! What are you people smoking!!! This DIVA Favre has to make a decision and stick with it!!! HE IS NOT GOD!!!!

July 12, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Let him come back, who cares really. I wont be rooting for any teams he joins regardless.

July 12, 2008  10:01 AM ET

I say let him play.....in Miami.Remember, they have a guy who recently purchased 50% of the Dolphins and the stadium and he just might want to fill some seats for the first time in many years.(they have 3 west coast teams coming to Miami and could use help with ticket sales)They should be able to sign him outright or give up a mid-round pick to the Pack.Parcel is running the show and he LOVES old QB's and it would be a great guage to see what kind of team he actually has.IF Ronnie Brown is healthy, they could go 8-8 ,and more importantly, stop being a doormat for the division.

July 12, 2008  10:09 AM ET

they spoiled the **** out of him thats y

July 12, 2008  10:10 AM ET

Let him back as a Packer only -- a veteran quaterback behind Rogers. Not to bad -- as I said before ... Rogers is a good QB but prone to injury. No way way should Pack management release him -- either retire or wear green and gold.

July 12, 2008  10:17 AM ET

He should've waited to make his decision just before training camp. Rodgers could've been penciled in as the starter and then been erased.

July 12, 2008  10:27 AM ET

I honestly think He should come back, the packers release him and then either the Panthers, Baltimore, or some team looking for a short term solution at QB (gruden especially) can pound on the packer's. Besides Ted Thompson is blinking idiot and What the hell is so special about rodgers? He couldn't beat USC or even finish a season just like the California Golden Bears. Prone to injury yes he is, but i think he is going to choke under pressure and Ryan Grant the Packer's "Godsend" RB can get stuffed every single play. Can't wait til Dallas goes to GB and beats the stuffing out of them especially so close to my BDay.
