Why Packers won't release Favre

There is no question that quarterback Brett Favre is serious about his return to the National Football League. But as committed as he is to playing again, the Green Bay Packers are just as serious about moving on without him, which means if Favre wants to play it will have to be for another team. So which team will it be? Favre would like to be able to choose from the other 31 teams, which is why he reportedly sent a letter to the Packers asking for his unconditional release. But according to sources close to the situation, that will never happen and if Favre wants to play somewhere else it will be for a team of the Packers' choosing. According to the source, the Packers won't release Favre because it would open the door for him to sign with one of the three other NFC North teams, which general manager Ted Thompson would never allow to happen.

He wldnt sign with the freakin LIons

July 12, 2008  08:40 AM ET

And doubtful he would go to Chi where their OL and RB arent solid

It wld be Minny, who would then become instant SB contenders

I like it. The Packers should FORCE him to retire. The price he pays for crying wolf one too many times.

It is the Packers duty to do what is best for the team. And they will. No way should they release him. He had a contract and should honor it. Tell him, sure, come on back, we need a quality back up for Rodgers. Then trade him to whom, and for what they can get.
Sounds like he and his agent already broke the rules and tried to make a deal on their own while still under contract with the league..
No one is bigger than the game, not even Favre.

Thanx 50yearoldfan well said!!!! I just wish the media would stop stroking this clown!!! Especially ESPN!!!! You know whats funny??? When other teams try to move pass legends(miami,Tennesse,Atlanta etc) none of these so called experts ever disagree noe that the Packers are all of a sudden their the evil empire!!!! THE PACKERS HAVE CHANGED THEIR OFFENSE, THEY HAVE KEY FREE AGENTS TO SIGN, AND THE TEAM NEEDS TO KNOW WHO THEIR LEADER IS!!! FAVRE IS A SELFISH PIECE OF GARBAGE!!! oh and Brett NOBODY TOLD YOU TO CHANGE THE PLAY AND THROW THAT INTERCEPTION IN THE TITLE GAME, YOU DID IT, NOT THE PACKERS!!!

July 12, 2008  10:09 AM ET

just bow out. seriously. you had a great career. a guy needs to know when to call it quits.

July 12, 2008  10:11 AM ET

as a season ticket holder, and only knowing brett favre as my qb in green bay...i still loudly and proudly say **** brett for pushing it this far. I hope Ted says if you want to play you can ride the bench behind rodgers for the next 3 years...we have the cap room to let you rot. Fact of the matter is...it never would have come to this had you given a committment instead of doing this yearly media shower on yourself. and now you put all of us through a retirement which should have ended this whole thing. I'm very disappointed in you, so much for the fact I hope you do end up leaving and the madden curse does come true, because that's what you deserve....way to turn your backs on the most loyal fan base in the league.

What makes anyone think "Lord Farve" would be welcomed in any NFL camp? I know if I was running a team, I'd definitely NOT be interested.

July 12, 2008  10:20 AM ET

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh the irony.....

Favre on Javon Walker when he wanted a new contract or out of Green Bay in 2005:

Javon has tremendous potential. We got to see some of that last year. The sky's the limit for that guy, and I'd be the first to defend him, but he's going about it the wrong way. What happened to honoring your contract and saying, 'Let's work as a team to see if we can get this done?' Why not go about it that way?

"Maybe I'm old-school, but I always thought you honor a contract. Sure, sometimes guys pass you up in salary, and maybe it's a lesser player, but it's all based on what a team has as far as value in that person. "I sure hope the Packers don't give into him," Favre said.

Yeah Brett....I hope they don't give into you either

After all Farve has done for the Packers, they owe him a chance to return or his outright release. Why the heck did Ted Thompson keep the lines of communication closed with Farve? He and McCarthy are going to lose the favor of a lot of fans. If they don't win their division, (and I don't think they will), one or both will be quickly shown the door.

July 12, 2008  10:24 AM ET

The Packers management has acted professionally in all this. It is Favre's agent, and his home town lackey sport writer friend, ( Jones ) that have tried to paint the Packers as the Evil Empire and placing them in a position to draw bad publicity .
The Packers are 35 million under the cap and can afford to say " Sure, come on back and ready to take Rodgers place if he gets hurt."..The trade his selfish a** to the highest bidder ( Not in the NFC).
Favre does not want to play, he wants to play under his conditions and by his rules....He has no leverage in any of this and cannot demand anything...
The Packers brain trust is one of the best in the NFL. They know what they saw in that championship game. A QB who played like an old man and did not step up to the plate in the biggest game of the year for the team....
Time to turn the page. The Packers are one of, if not the, youngest teams in the league with money to spend. They have a big window of opportunity.

July 12, 2008  10:28 AM ET

Hey Bears you need a QB trade your pick for him. (jk)

July 12, 2008  10:35 AM ET

Actually Farve has more leverage than you may think in all of this. He can put the Packer's in a very very bad situation. All he has to do is inform the team he wants to be reinstated to the active roster. Per NFL Rules they then have 24 hours to do so or they must cut him.

Fast forward into the season when Farve is sitting the bench and Rodgers is struggling badly. How will public opinion be in GB where the majority of fans have already said if he wants come back he should be allowed back.

I understand the Packer's not wanting to allow him to go to a rival, but they need to either let him go or trade him.

They really need to work something out with him on this,

Thompson may have mishandled the entire affair

Chap

Agree

Watch them be 3-5 or 4-4 in a winnable division and the Pack fans will be wishing he was there

July 12, 2008  10:54 AM ET

Brett has made this mess. I've always been a Favre fan, but he flip-flops about retiring for a few years, then expects the Packers to welcome him back with open arms? Trade him to the Ravens or Dolphins.

July 12, 2008  10:55 AM ET

djroxalot....thompson didn't mishandle this. According to sources, after the retirement Brett reached out to Thompson and head coach McCarthy and wanted to return. The Packers were all for it. This was around the time of the owners meetings in late March. Apparently Thompson was the deciding vote saying it wasn't too late to un-retire. The Packers even went so far as chartering a jet to Mississippi later that week to bring him up to Green Bay and make it official. Two days before the meeting, Favre phoned Green Bay and backed out. While team officials were stunned by Favre's reversal, they made the decision to move on and draft his replacement, a move that Favre indicated he understood at the time.

Favre screwed this up for himself.

July 12, 2008  11:33 AM ET

Jennings85 ..That is the same way I read it. Favre is the one here who seems unable to commit to anything..

July 12, 2008  11:36 AM ET

deactivate him and pay his salery he allready had a nice press confrence and everything. as we have seen in the past with guys like Seau a retirement ceremony doesn't really count. guess it was practice.

July 12, 2008  12:03 PM ET

OLD MAN, PLEASE GO AWAY!!!!!! AND STAY RETIRED!!!!

I've got an idea! Why don't you sign to play in Russia! They are handing out big, tax free contracts for old, washed up players like you over there ! Oh, wait! You don't play hockey! Nyet!
