Fuentes prefers New York trade

Posted: Saturday July 12, 2008 08:26AM ET

Rockies closer Brian Fuentes heard enough rumors about a potential future with the Mets that he recently sought out Amazin's counterpart Billy Wagner for advice. The left-handed Fuentes can become a free agent after this season, and the Mets are pursuing the three-time All-Star along with the Yankees, Rays, Cardinals and Marlins. As The Post's Joel Sherman reported exclusively two weeks ago, the Mets also are in pursuit of Mariners outfielder Raul Ibanez. Tampa Bay reportedly is considered the favorite for Fuentes, but Fuentes said yesterday before a three-game series at Shea Stadium that the prospect of the Mets or Yankees would intrigue him more.

It's Not!

Actually, Fuentes said himself he's a West Coast guy. But whatever, I wouldn't complain to see him on the Yanks. The Rays are said to be the front-runner though.

The Yanks have the ageless wonder, Mariano Rivera dont they????

Report Offensive Comment

Yes, but no lefty reliever.

Report Offensive Comment

Exactly Coletrain. The Yanks need a lefty reliever in the worst way.

The Rox will deal Fuentes before long, and will get a pretty fair haul. My guess is Tampa.

well of course a guy seeking maximum cash wants to play for the Mets or the Yankees -- and if it's the Yankees, he won't even have to perform well after signing a big contract ... Cashman is famous for getting guys who fail to live up to past performance or future expectations ... it would be nice for the Yankees to get a solid lefty for the bullpen -- just don't know if Fuentes is the real deal, and pitching well for Colorado gives no real insight into genuine ability

Pitching well in Coors field is quite an accomplishment.

I wonder what kind of advice Wagner would give a guy who is trying to take his job.

I agree, CardsGFan2...Well it's again decision time apparently for the NY Y. Traber or Fuentes? Ok so there is no real difficult decision to make there, except what is 'give up cost' currently and in the future, If he is a west coast guy, I guess he wants the big bucks, doesn't everyone? Long term deals for pitchers have in the past appear to have high risk for cashman and the boys.

"Actually, Fuentes said himself he's a West Coast guy"

he will go where the $ is - once he hits free agency.

would 'intrigue' him more = would pay him more

the yankks should be sellers not buyers at the trade deadline because the offense is horrible and there is no sign of stopping the rays ro bosox

He didn't say that he preferred a New York trade. He said, "Playing in pinstripes would be special in and of itself." That's all he said about it. He also said that he likely wouldn't stay with the team that he got traded to, since he will be either a setup guy or left-on-left specialist, and he wants to close. In other words, it doesn't make a whole lot of difference to him where he gets traded to.

He could be the closer in St Louis....... I hope Mozeliak goes after him hard

Report Offensive Comment

He'll go wherever the $$$ leads him.

Report Offensive Comment

Go Yanks ...... If the Yanks are to be sellers, what could they sell? Nearly every veteran player who we would want to deal is overpaid, underperforming, and has a no-trade clause.

Report Offensive Comment

Go Yanks, I have to agree w/ you I mean rumors are the Rockies are scouting Humberto Sanchez and Mark Melancon, I'm saying no if I'm Cashman to that. The Yankees need to sell at this dealine th LH reliever coming in the market is not going to be worth it longterm wise.

Where's NY MESS when the Mets win 9 in a row? Show your face.....wuss.

Report Offensive Comment

He's silly if he really wants to pitch in a setup role for the Yankees or Mets more than as a closer for the Cardinals or Devil Rays. I have a feeling that it was more likely a situation where Fuentes was pandering to the local reporter, and if he would have made a similar comment no matter where he was. Had been in Kansas City he would've said the idea of pitching for the Royals was more intriguing to him.

With Joba starting and Mo getting older, this would be a great acquisition for the Yankees. The Red Sox and Rays could both use him though. Rox to setup for Papelbon and the Rays and their main guy. However he said he'd prefer New York so we shall see.

Yankees need to start hitting though. Last year they were held to 3 runs or less something like 32 times all season. They've been held to that same standard 35 times already this season.

When you're runs for avg is 3 you aren't going to win too many games and Sexson isn't the answer.
