Why Braves won't trade Teixeira

The July 31 trade deadline nears and The Question looms: Will the Braves trade Mark Teixeira? "I would say right now we're more concerned with trying to get the team healthy and playing the way they're capable," said general manager Frank Wren, who declined to say if the Braves have discussed a new contract with Teixeira or agent Scott Boras. Boras will probably seek a long-term contract -- seven or more years -- worth more than $20 million annually. Teixeira might get significantly larger offers from one or more big-market teams than from the Braves. The reason the Braves aren't ready to trade away players is because they expect an infusion from within their own pitching staff after the All-Star break. The Braves plan to have starter Mike Hampton and closer Rafael Soriano back from the disabled list shortly after play resumes. Tom Glavine could be back within a month if he has no setbacks in his recovery from a flexor tendon injury in his pitching elbow.

Counting on Hampton is a mistake.

The Braves are definitely in the race. The team would also get the draft picks if Teixiera leaves.

Why Braves won't trade Teixeira

Answer: Because they would rather let him walk away at the end of this season, take more $ from another team, and leave the Braves getting screwed with nothing. The Braves ARE TOO CHEAP to keep any good players { i.e. Rafael Furcal, Sheffield, Javy Lopez(when he was good) }

July 12, 2008  11:25 AM ET

Teixeira is represented by the unprincipled Boras ... nothing else to say ...

July 12, 2008  11:27 AM ET

They are too cheap to keep super stars, but the replaced Sheffield with Francouer, Lopez with McCann and Furcal with Escobar. They need reliable pitching in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Soriano should be able to facilitate some of that.

All those players maybe had one good year in them when they left. Now they are they are DL candidates or out of baseball.
In fact the Braves have a history of letting players go just before the "big slump," Can you say, Andruw Jones?
I think the Braves are pretty savvy Salary Cap players. A smart team would let any Boras player go and collect young talent in return.
Dealing with Boras is just not worth it!

In this week's SI there was the article on cost per win. The only thing that kept them from fairing much better and being with the likes of the Twins, and A's was that they have Mike Hampton's $16 million salary. They do pretty well of letting stars go, and drafting well to replace them. They do well in trading them away as well. Look at Jurgens, behind Hudson, he is the most reliable pitcher. They traded Rentaria for him. They should get the Yankees and Red Sox involved, and get some of the Red Sox pitching prospects to help fill the void in the bullpen for next season.

Hmm. I'm no baseball analyst or anything.....but I think I may have identified a flaw in their plan.

TFB, you forgot to mention the part about Glavine......Now THERE'S a flawed plan.

July 12, 2008  12:33 PM ET

JT44 - I agree that the braves have indeed done a good job of picking and choosing who they give long term deals to....look also at Chipper and all those pitchers over the years.

The Texiera thing though has not been smart. In retrospect they overpaid to get him. Texas has some nice players coming up from that trade. If they'd won with him then fine. They didn't and won't though.

My guess is he winds up in NY. I also predict that the fans will hate his d-bag attitude. I wish failure on him.

Damn it ain't time yet, is it?
Just how much is this guy worth?

July 12, 2008  01:05 PM ET

The Yankees would love to have this guy. If the Braves are so cheap they could pick up Sexton...lol

July 12, 2008  02:09 PM ET

Take it from a Cub fan, anyone named Soriano is just waiting to go on the DL!

July 12, 2008  02:37 PM ET

The Braves should trade him now or they'll have nothing to show for all of that young talent they gave away to Texas for him. Teixeira will follow Satan Boras' advise and walk for sure. The Braves just have way too many injuries and subpar years from their core players to make a run this year. Keeping Teixeira and hoping to make the playoffs would be a big mistake for this usually savvy team.

July 12, 2008  02:39 PM ET

Teixeira ain't worth it. He's getting RBIs in bunches but not when it's needed. He's no Chipper. Let him go. Get an ace instead.

July 12, 2008  02:44 PM ET

I think what they are really saying is we can get more with two draft picks than we are being offered at this point.

Most teams in the hunt don't have a hole at first. Those who want Teixeira seem to be content to let him hit the market and go for him this winter. The Angels would be a good fit; but, they aren't a Boras kind of team.

July 12, 2008  03:47 PM ET

I love how people are writing off the Braves with a relatively weak NL East, and half a season yet to play.

July 12, 2008  04:22 PM ET

Folks, the Braves are in the NL East race. Period. They've had a buttload of injuries, are about to get an arm or two back, and maybe Francoeur will start to hit again. Nobody else is going to run away with the division, are they? Philly's starting pitching is horrible after Hamels, and the Mets are a mess. That said, I would love to see the Braves trade Teixiera to the Angels for Casey Kotchman, Juan Rivera, Scott Shields and a prospect.

I agree that you can't count the Braves out...but that 'mess' in NY are about to go 8 straight tonight.
