With his offensively challenged lineup sagging under the pressure of not having Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui, Brian Cashman didn't discount looking into signing Richie Sexson when he clears release waivers next week. According to his agent, Casey Close, Sexson, 33, is mulling through offers but isn't likely to join a new team until next week.

Are you kidding me?!?!?!?! Sexson is horrible. Another bonehead Cashman move if he signs this sub-.200 hitting strikeout machine. That is NOT what the Yanks need right now.

July 12, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Sexson is offensively challenged himself.

July 12, 2008  11:00 AM ET

He will come cheap. Lots of teams should be interested. He has eaten humble pie after getting released, and a team would have to pay him only about $200 grand for the rest of the year. As a Sox fan, I wouldn't mind Boston taking a look if Ortiz has a setback.

July 12, 2008  11:23 AM ET

just what the Yankees need, another overpriced overpaid underachieving old 'slugger' -- Damon and Matsui being hurt doesn't excuse thelack of performance by ARod, Jeter, Matsui, Giambi, Cabrera, and Cano -- whne your leadoff guy [rookie] is hitting .143, it doesn't bode well -- the Yankees need new manager and coaches -- they also need to shed dead wood, not acquire more.

July 12, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Kevin Long is an excellent hitting coach, perhaps he can fix him

July 12, 2008  12:04 PM ET

Ha ha HAHAHAHA!

Please do this. Please please please. That will certainly help with all the goose eggs they've been putting up....look how much he's helped Seattle! Maybe they can get them to throw in Vidro too! They could use another solid DH option.

July 12, 2008  12:09 PM ET

The Yankees need to get some people that are "on base" guys. Damon and Matsui are both that type of player, but with them out it really hurts. Sexson would be a bad move, low batting average is not what they need.

July 12, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Thank God he's not a Latin player....or Omar Manaya would have signed him already.....

July 12, 2008  12:28 PM ET

The Yankees have enough good hitters that they should be able to handle Matsui and Damon being out. They do not need Sexson, but that's OK - just do not sign Barry Bonds.

July 12, 2008  12:35 PM ET

He can't set the table, or drive them in anymore, strikes out to much. First Ponson, then Zambrano, now Richie? I'm beginning to see a pattern here. Let's keep getting by on cheap take a chance players, to carry us to '09?...But one may argue, remember Big Daddy Cecil Fielder? OK Cashman, your dreaming again...If you think that is going to happen again, i got a bridge in Brooklyn I could sell you.

July 12, 2008  12:42 PM ET

I can see the reasoning behind Sexson as a bench guy. He hits lefties well and plays great D.

July 12, 2008  12:46 PM ET

The Original Tony, don't forget Darryl Strawberry, Aaron Small, Shawn Chacon, Chili Davis, David Justice.....there's nothing wrong with taking a chance on an aging, or underperforming retread. That's how you often find gold (don't forget, the Sox opened the 2003 season with David Ortiz splitting time with Jeremy Giambi and Kevin Millar at 1st and DH)....the problem is, they haven't been hitting on nearly as many as they've been missing on lately.

July 12, 2008  01:02 PM ET

I can't believe this. The Yankees need pitching not another guy to go to the plate and strike out. If Cashman goe through with this then he may need to go.

July 12, 2008  01:09 PM ET

Good point TF. but man the guy sure does strike out alot. To replace one of those left handers iwith a right hander, don't get me wrong, may be a good idea. But both of those guys are OF players, my god another 1B/DH? Now they got Posada, giambi, betermit, there. I'd say if Posada still has the shoulder problem, OK.Lets face it, Cashman and the boys are open minded regarding trades, and signings, bitermit in a trade for a pitcher, Richie in behind him, etc. etc. Who the heck knows at this time, they are what 6.5 games out? just what's going to spark this offense on ? The lefty's coming back and yes a right handed stick, but Richie, man, I don't know.

July 12, 2008  01:19 PM ET

at $200,000 it wouldn't be a bad thing, even if they sent him down to the minors.. they don't NEED another first base or DH, he doesn't have any kind of arm so he can't play outfieild.. if the are in need of anything it would be PITCHING...

July 12, 2008  01:24 PM ET

no way the yanks get him-
this is a non-story as far as Yankees go-

the yankees will be going for PITCHING-
they have plenty of hitting, once Damon comes back.
if anything (position-player- wise)- they would look for an outfielder

if richie sexson is the answer the question must be "how can we get worse and suck the life force out of our team?"

July 12, 2008  03:06 PM ET

I could strike out less than Richie Sexson. The Yankees have no reason to sign him. Why would you want to replace Johnny Damon with a player who is the exact opposite? And also, I can't imagine Sexson signing for less than 4 million.

July 12, 2008  03:11 PM ET

After recent developments ie Ponson ( a pleasant surprise ) and scouting V. Zambrano, this rumor does not surprise me. We've gone from a championship franchise with one of the most prestigious histories to becoming a team that recycles other peoples waste.
