MLB scouts sweating betting probe

Major League Baseball's new investigative unit has identified at least one baseball scout in its new inquiry into illegal gambling, and continuing investigation may yield names of more scouts, sources told SI.com. Veteran Orioles scout Alan Marr was fired by his team sometime after his name was tied in some way to sports betting, and sources with knowledge of the investigation indicated that there could be a few other scouts linked, as well. Marr was a well-respected national crosschecker with the Orioles, a high position on the scouting totem pole that's just below the scouting director. "A lot of people are sweating out there,'' one baseball executive said.

I don't know Twins fans.

Active members of baseball organizations betting on sports could kill the game faster than PEDs. Any whiff that games are being influenced or thrown by gambling is a PR nightmare.

I will be interested to see how Selig handles this if it gains "legs" in the media or implicates even more people as compared to how Stern handled his P.R. mess in the NBA with his scandal.

Doesn't matter. 75% of U.S. sports fans believe the NBA is rigged in one way or another, according to a recent ESPN poll, yet the NBA continues to remain a popular and profitable "entertainment" source.

We fans have an inexhaustible supply of forgiveness for our favorite sports and will continue to spend money to follow them, regardless of the scandals through the years, whether it be labor strikes, stadium ransoming, steroids, draft lottery conspiracies, athlete behavior, gambling, etc.

Selig sucks.

Baseball is a bit different. I haven't seen NBA, NFL, or NHL fans up in arms about PEDs. Selig should be worried about this.

Well here we go. Sports in america is in disaray. The only sport thats respectable is golf. Thats sad.

"The only sport thats respectable is golf."

I'd be careful with statement Crean. Golf (or those in power in America who control golf) has been one of the most discriminatory activities in the history of America. It's a sport dominated by rich, white, men who are members of country clubs, at least some of which, who exclude women and minorities. I'd throw golf near the top of the heap as far as American embarassments.

if you go to www.aksplace.com you will be able to find a list of online sportsbooks to wager at.

Does this idiot actually think that anyone here would actually go to this website and bet real money? I could see monopoly or Canadien money, but not real money!

July 12, 2008  04:17 PM ET

I wouldnt suspect the Orioles to do that .

So what else is knew? Sports betting is the drug of choice for some addicts. Hell, people are betting on the sausage race at Miller park [Brewers] in Vegas! Outlaw betting all together or just sit back and watch.

A scandal in baseball? It streches one's imagination.
