Cheers for Giambi, but not Bonds

Barry Bonds must be kicking himself. As he watches Jason Giambi morph from pariah to hero, being feted with mustache day at Yankee Stadium in support of a failed All-Star candidacy, Bonds has to be thinking, "You mean, all I had to do was say I did it." Giambi on at least three occasions all but admitted he cheated, that he used performance-enhancing drugs to get an edge. That admission, coupled with cultivated personal charm, has been enough to earn Giambi -- a mediocre power hitter -- a Major League Baseball pass. While Giambi has become a media darling, Bonds, the greatest home run hitter of our time, can't get a job. Why, with so many major league teams desperate for help, is Bonds being boycotted? The pat answer is the so-called baggage Bonds might bring.

Giambi has a great personality and is a big hit with his teammates, coaches, fans and the media. Look no further to San Francisco's locker room in order to gauge the effect Bonds had on his teammates. They disdained him.

-- a mediocre power hitter -- ?

His lifetime OPS is higher than Ortiz, Griffey, Teixeira, Sheffield and a good number of other outstanding power hitters. He's 7th in the league this year.

He's an All Star power hitter over his career ya pin heads.

July 12, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Yeah but it's always fun to dis him.

You need to read this entire column written by the most underrated columnist in America, William C. Rhoden. Rhoden makes a great point about the complete hypocrisy of the Yankees (and really every other team). Bonds is an unlikely signee due to among many things including accusations of steroid use. Meanwhile, another alleged/almost admitted drug cheat, Giambi gets a "moustache day" at the ball park including impressionable kids looking like Giambi for the day. If you don't see the problem with this, you are not looking at the complete picture here.

What about Clemens? How are he and McGwire doing in the press?

It's not about hypocrisy. It's about refusals to cooperate with Federal investigations. There's no doubt in my mind that Bonds would be signed today if he'd cooperated with Federal investigations. Giambi did cooperate so he's not under federal indictment/investigation. Bonds nightmare is of his own creation and due to his unbelievable arrogance..

July 12, 2008  10:38 AM ET

Oh get real. Bonds is hated because of his miserable attitude towards others and life. Giambi has always been respected because of his good nature and is a team player. BIG DIFFERENCE!! Besides, Giambi admitted to his mistakes and got it over with, what about Bonds? Bonds doesn't just hate white people, he hates all people, He hates himself. That's Bonds.

CardsFan2, my point here was to urge people to read the whole column to see how hypocritical the Yankees are (and many other teams) in promoting one alleged drug cheat and likely shunning another. Forget about the attitudes, personalities of the two - they're both alleged drug cheats.

By the way, McGuire has fallen off the face of the earth. And Clemens is a completely different situation about an egomaniac who finally for the first time is not getting his way.

July 12, 2008  10:49 AM ET

If you want to complain about people getting absolution after contrition that's fine. That's what we are talking about here. Bonds, Clemens and McGwire refuse the contrition part so they are pariahs

There's no hypocrisy involved. There's more hypocrisy involved in trying to say Clemens is a completely different situation - it's the exact same situation. Massive ego leading to complete destruction.

July 12, 2008  10:52 AM ET

Can you not see that everyone who cooperated has been forgiven while everyone who obstructed is now a pariah? No hypocrisy there. You may not like the result. That doesn't make it hypocrisy.

July 12, 2008  11:05 AM ET

I'm telling you, baseball fans in general are forgiving about the steroid issue - it's the denials that pisss off the casual fan. That's why McGwire has no respect right now, and Giambi and Pettitte get a pass.

July 12, 2008  12:52 PM ET

Yes, he gets a pass and he's doing pretty good with the power numbers right now. People have their ups and downs, and are forgiven by many of us, but whether or not he should play is I guess up to the commissioner and the union grievences. I do not recall if he used before the MLB ban or not, I think before, but as many of you said, it may not have been banned then but certainly against the law re: unprescribed med's. Yes the giambino is doing well, it must be the stache...

"Bonds is hated because of his miserable attitude towards others"

yes-
but it's more than that-
people are JEALOUS of how good a plyer he is....
it's the same thing with Arod-
Arod has NEVER been in trouble, works his B U TT off, plays hard....
and is demonized

"There's more hypocrisy involved in trying to say Clemens is a completely different situation - it's the exact same situation. Massive ego leading to complete destruction."

Cardsfan, you CANNOT say the experience of a black man in America and a white man in America both in this spotlight (like Clemens and Bonds) is the "exact same situation". Take a look at America right now and what has gone on - from coast to coast - there is no way these two are the same situation.

And we finally come to the real issue. No Bonds doesn't get a pass because he's a black man. It hasn't played out the same? Clemens is being hammered every bit as hard as Bonds. The Feds are working hard on the case to indict Clemens. It's just a matter of time. Show me the group welcoming Clemens into anything. He's considered poison in all venues.

Condemning Clemens while giving Bonds a pass would be the real double standard and the height of hypocrisy. Where did Bonds grow up? How many advantages did he have in his life? This isn't a guy who grew up in the ghetto. He had every advantage this country has to offer. He and Clemens are both reaping what they have sown. No one is crucifying them unjustly.

July 12, 2008  02:00 PM ET

ya totaly different cause bonds still hasnt been proven to have taken steriods

tell me how u know he took steriods ppl

July 12, 2008  02:06 PM ET

The reality is that we do accept apology's, especially when we perceive them to be honest. I think what people liked about Jason was, not only did he apoligize the best he could under the circumstances, he didn't insult us by denying the allegations. Barry dug his own hole, It should teach other athletes and non athletes that if you go around treating people like crap, sooner or later it comes back you. And for those in denial, Barry admitted taken them in his grand jury testimony. Don't defend Barry, he was an adult and made his own decisions.

July 12, 2008  02:12 PM ET

He was twice the power hitter after 35 than he was before 35. Get real beat.la2. Barry never took steroids, Roger never took steroids and McGwire only took Andro. Keep repeating it until you believe it.
