Deciding whether he should give up the game that has defined his life isn't getting any easier for Joe Sakic. The Avalanche center said that he won't make a decision about his future until near the time training camp begins in September. "I've got some time," the 19-year NHL veteran said before his tee time at the American Century Championship Celebrity-Am on Thursday morning near Lake Tahoe. "I want to make sure I'm 100 percent whichever way I choose.

It's kinda hard on the Avs as an organization. They're kind of nothing without him, he's been their C for I don't know how long and without him, well.. I don't see how they would make the playoffs unless they improve all positions. They don't have a keeper, a No 1 center or any depth in defense..

If Sakic retires, I think they'll have to fight to keep out of the bottom of the conference. On the other hand, Wild, Oilers and Canucks are quite weak aswell..

Forsberg will likely retire, he gave it a good try but his body won't hold up for another season.

Agree,
Your Right, Avs C has been and Always will be Burnaby JOE. Just liek Yzermen is the wings C for lifE!

THere is no real Depth in the forward lines, we have some young guns who are upcomers, but no one that is really ready to take a team to the playoffs and further!

Unfortunately we are sitting ducks which ever way he chooses, but for him i would give the time! either way, he will be with the team!

I think Sakic is waiting to see what the Avs are doing to improve through UFA signings and/or trades prior to making his decision. He doesn't want to come back to a team that will struggle all year.

As far as the weak teams, Dashiva, I agree about the Wild and Canucks but take the Oilers off that list. They were red hot the second half of last season and just improved their D a lot with a couple of trades recently. Their D is solid and very mobile now. They have three forward lines that can put the puck in the net. Scoring was not a problem, their D was and they fixed that. Their Goaltending is solid. Weak they are not!

Calgary, on the other hand, got a lot tougher, slower, older and less talented. A team of muckers, Mike Keenan style. The NW is up for grabs this year.

Hard for these guys to let go I guess. Hope he sticks around for another season.

6th time T&R has run this exact same story.

July 12, 2008  05:28 PM ET

BTW, if Sundin is worth 2 years/$20 million to Vancouver, the Canucks should value Sakic at $40 million+. He's twice the leader Sundin could ever aspire to be.

July 12, 2008  09:10 PM ET

Yeah, the Oilers are gonna win the division this year. They have the young talent to be scary good, especially considering the fact that those guys still aren't taking it too seriously, they're just out there having fun and playing hard.

Sakic will be back. Just for the record, he has been the Captain since 1989 when the Nordiques traded Peter Stastny, the former captain, to New Jersey. I think that he and the Avs both know that he will be back, which is why neither side is making too big a deal out of this.

July 12, 2008  09:53 PM ET

If healthy, he can still score 90 points. He may not be as fast. But his hockey sense and skills are still there. When he finally makes it to the Hall Of Fame, I hope he goes in as a Nordique. That would make it a hat trick (Goulet, Stastny, Sakic).

July 12, 2008  10:14 PM ET

He'll be back for one more.

July 13, 2008  12:43 AM ET

I agree, Sakic is to Colorado as Stevie Y was to Detroit. The problem arises when you consider that the Avs no longer have Patrick Roy to bank on if they have a bad night. I'd like to see Sakic back, as a rival to my own team, the Wings, but his retirement might be well timed if he so chooses. The Wings crushed them in the playoffs this year, and they definitely need some work if they think they're going to make a run at the cup this year.

July 13, 2008  11:02 AM ET

Please come back for one more season Joe.

July 13, 2008  11:58 AM ET

Joe should come back for two more years because he is needed on the 2010 Olympic team and the games are right in his back yard
