Irish cornerback out for '08

As Notre Dame attempts to rectify what went wrong in 2007, there is now one loss on the books before the 2008 season even begins. Starting cornerback Darrin Walls will not be enrolled for the fall semester, the school said Friday, depriving the Fighting Irish secondary of one of its most experienced and productive players. Walls started 11 of 12 games in 2007 and tied for the team lead with nine pass breakups. Notre Dame said only that Walls is gone because of "personal reasons," with Irish coach Charlie Weis adding he was hopeful for Walls' return in the spring. Because there do not appear to be legal entanglements, it strongly suggests the matter is a Notre Dame school policy issue. Irish Illustrated, citing unnamed sources, reported that it is an academic matter. Efforts to reach Walls or his family were unsuccessful.

Not good at all. This is really bad for the team. Walls was the best defensive player. At least he played at our deepest position.

They are deep at that position, but Charlie was looking for his leadership this year. Just shows that despite what people say about ND, at least Charlie isn't willing to compromise the program for a player, even one that is badly needed.

Yeah he looked great in the spring game. I would still rather have Walls back there!

Ole hamburgerler in the flesh looks like he is ready to pacman some cheeseburgers.

Go! Charlie cheesburger! Go!

It had been 3 days since the last T&R appearance of Charlie Weis' gigantic bulbous 56 pound cube-shaped head.

Great programs have depth at all positions.

July 12, 2008  06:37 PM ET

I have depth at all positions too.

At least "thats what she said"

Is it me or does Weiss look like an elephant seal now....everyone knows that the pope runs the show in catholic sports here in the U.S.

I'll say that the University of ND isn't compromising, but I am certain it was not Charlie's call.

July 12, 2008  10:37 PM ET

You're right, it probably wasn't his call but it sounds like he supports it. Probably a good thing coaches don't have that kind of power, i'm sure some would abuse it.

I'm sorry, but you have to go to school in South Bend my friends.

Yeah, ND's curriculum is as stringent as Florida State's. HA!

July 13, 2008  11:43 AM ET

Charlie looks very "gassy" in that picture. Was that taken after he found out his CB couldn't play this season?

"arejaydub": I'm no fan of the Irish, but Notre Dame's admissions standards are very high, and most USC players would not be able to play for ND simply based on academic requirements.

Comparing Florida State to Notre Dame, at least academically, shows how little knowledge you have.

suckeyedude, are you blind or what? Did you not see the "HA!" at the end of my post or did you purposely ignore it to take a shot at USC & I? Folks taking everything they read "literally" is what helped a guy like George Bush get in the White House. Dummies.

July 13, 2008  02:33 PM ET

arejay - we've had a democratic controlled congress for 2 years and they haven't done squat. Also, if you don't think you're paying enough taxes you can mail me some of your extra money and move to Europe.

July 13, 2008  02:46 PM ET

PS Forever, it's called VETO. How can they get anything done?

July 13, 2008  02:56 PM ET

PS Forever, don't beg the question. Why would I move to Europe? The dollar's so weak against the Euro right now it's shameful. You and the rest of the folks that voted for George know, whether in the back of you minds or not, that he has **** this country up. Unless you're super-rich, there's no way you can say that you're better off than you were eight years ago. When it's all said and done, this administration will go down as one of, if not the worst, administration ever.
