Cubs kept Woods injury secret

A blister on Kerry Wood's right index finger will prevent him from pitching in Tuesday night's All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. Wood has had the blister problem for the last three weeks, but the Cubs didn't let on so other teams wouldn't know about it. When Wood was not called upon to pitch in the ninth inning of Saturday's game against San Francisco, however, it was obvious something was up. Manager Lou Piniella announced after the game that Wood's blister was the reason he didn't use him, and that he would rest his closer until Friday night in Houston after the All-Star Game.

If this was the NFL, the Cubs would have been fined for hiding an injury....The gamblers don't like that.

He made it, he deserved it, and good decision to rest and get healed.

I don't even gamble and I hate the way teams hide injuries. The Cardinals are just as bad as the Cubs about hiding them.

I'm not sure the Cubs were "hiding" this, but some beat writers (and conspiracy theorists) love to make up a story.

The Tribune says the blister has been a problem for 3 weeks, the Sun Times says it came up THIS week.

Since June 30th, Wood appeared in 6 games, logging 5 innings worth of work. That's pretty much on pace with his schedule this season. Saturday night was the first time he was skipped in a save situation during that span.

Paul Sullivan's hyped up story doesn't match the facts. Either way, a week off will help Kerry and the Cubs down the stretch.

Blisters heal. No biggie. It's his shoulder you have to watch out for.

I remember back in the 1982 World Series, when the Cards played the Brewers. Rollie Fingers of the Brewers was injured for the series, but the Brewers kept on saying that he was ready to play if he was really needed. Then after they lost the series, they admitted that he was way too injured to play and that they were just bluffing to get in the Crads minds. I saw nothing wrong with that.

Sorry for the double hit.

I keep waiting for Woods to get hurt and be out for the rest of the year. You know it's coming. I guess since Prior is gone, he was waiting for Harden to join him on the DL.

Why not hide the injury. Even in baseball it is a huge advantage to know who your opponent will bring in to certain situations.

July 13, 2008  11:46 AM ET

I wasn't aware that injured players had to be outed to the press. When did that become law?

Who cares about the gamblers?
Whats important is baseball, and not disclosing the injury is legit strategy.
For you losers hoping for an injury to a player on the opposing team...Get a life.
Give me a break!

If a player is having an off day, are you supposed to run over to your opponent's dugout and make an announcement?

Strategy, my friends... keep your cards close to your vest.

July 13, 2008  01:14 PM ET

I don't think people think it's a big deal because they hid it if they did. It's a big deal because EVERYONE knew that Wood was going to be selected to the All-Star Game and they come out 2 days before players travel for it...and now with a bunch of the pitchers on the NL Roster starting on Sunday someone is probably going to pitch more than they have to because the Cubs didn't come forward beforehand.

July 13, 2008  01:34 PM ET

Good move on his part..why would you say something? Called strategy!

Lou has talked about the blister in recent weeks, but now that Kerry has been shut down as a precaution and to heal, it becomes "news". The extra days off will help Kerry and Soriano at just the right time.
