No-trade twist in Redden's deal

It seems Wade Redden needed a sweetener to take his $39M, seven-year deal. So the GM gave the defenseman the annual right to give management a list of eight teams to which he cannot be traded, and it will just be unfortunate if Atlanta should want him in a deal for Ilya Kovalchuk, won't it? Brutal.

GMs don't learn about their mistakes! NTCs all over the place again!!

I don't like Redden for 30 million, never mind 40! He is long past his prime, not physical and rumours have it that he has an active night (sniff sniff) life. Should go over like a sulfur bomb in Times Square. Giving him a NTC is idiotic. I wouldn't want Kovalchuk anyway... too selfish. He has never been known for his attitude, and playing in Atlanta for about 6 losing seasons has made him more of a me-first type.

joec, isn't on-ice-selfishness what Ilya is expected to do in Atlanta? If he played for a good team and were paired with a real playmaker, he could still be a me-first player, but he coukd be a dominator as well. It would be quite a new experience.for him, though.

What GM would be dumb enough to give a NTC to a dimwit like Redden? Why? This is not Crosby or Lecavalier we're talking about here.

Like the article says, " ... it will just be unfortunate if Atlanta should want him in a deal for Ilya Kovalchuk, won't it? Brutal." I agree!

NTC's are bull crap anyway !
All it does is screw the organization and limit it's ability to improve via trade .

I'm sure Ottawa's one of the eight teams.

This writer is arguing the absurd and Kovalchuk but I'm not too uppity about giving a 31 yo Dman such a long deal at so much. These types of stipulations always scare me a tad bit.

first of all the New York Post should stick up with the Yankees cause Redden has a 6 yrs deal not a 7 yrs deal and Glen Sather is now Way TOO OLD for that job giving him 8 milllion dollar the first year so Redden has a raise. WOW the salary cap this year is a joke (the way they spend the $)

July 13, 2008  09:39 PM ET

The contract was a joke. I guess MSG didn't pay attention last year. When GM Bryan Murray asked him to wave his no-trade clause & he wouldn't.

All things considered I like the Rangers lineup this season more than last. Nik looks good and would go great with Gomez. Even put Naslung on the second line. Naslund though.. wah..

Nikolai Zherdev is a good player, but I'm not too crazy about trading away Fedor Tyutin.

You can guarantee that Bogota, Columbia will not be on his 'no-trade' list of cities.

He likes it anywhere he can find "snow."
