Packers pick Rodgers over Favre
The Green Bay Packers aren't ruling out the slim possibility Brett Favre could be on their 2008 roster -- at least, not publicly -- or the possibility of trading the legendary quarterback. But general manager Ted Thompson reiterated Saturday afternoon that Aaron Rodgers is the team's starter, despite Favre's recent unretirement talk. Thompson said the idea that Favre could only return as Rodgers' backup was "misinterpreted," but Thompson also stopped short of saying if Favre came back there would be an open competition in training camp for the starting job. Calling the situation still "volatile" and admitting "it's been a tough few days," Thompson said in a half-hour interview the team has no intention of honoring Favre's written request for his outright release, and the club will wait and see what its next move will be if and when Favre formally applies for reinstatement with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Favre HAS been a legendary quarterback ... but when you retire and give no doubt to your former team that you have absolutely no interest in returning to the game, then just move on. Packers must now back Aaron Rodgers and build their team around him (or the next QB or the next one). Apparently Favre believes he's entitled to flip-flopping on his decision, but he needs to consider the impact to his FORMER team at this point in time (his actions have been selfish, in my opinion). And the Packers will never simply release him -- they can still get some value from a trade to help surround Rodgers with talent in other areas.

And my off-the-cuff comment is: trade him to a divisional rival so you have two chances to pound him this year.

Yes Jim, the Packers should move on with AR from Favre just because he was indecisive in the off season before training camp started. Because great QBs in this league are so easy to find. Lets take a look at all the QBs the Pack went through between Bart Starr and Brett Favre.

would love to see A.R. get the starting job and do well, that way 49er fans can complain more about Alex "Nicole" Smith.

If Brett decides to come back to the Packers then he will be the starter. Ther is no question on that.
It does not appear that Brett WANTS to come back to the Packers. He appears to be angling for his release.
Pretty bush-league and weasely thing to do.
There is NO WAY the Packers should "just release" this guy. Get something in return for this mess.
Brett brought all of this on himself.....he can deal with the fallout.

Fan of Football: you're sarcasm is very true -- great QBs are not easy to come by. But that's why there's a Hall of Fame ... not every team is entitled to "Favre-like" leadership and performance. I'm not knocking Favre's ability or the Packers decision ... I'm saying that Favre had his chance and he balked at it. Also, who owns/runs the Packers organization??? Apparently Favre thinks he does!

If they traded him to Minny=They would be SB contenders
Even Chicago with Favre would be better than GB

Favre will probably be dealt at this point. The damage to the working relationship there is great.
So, if he's traded, where does he go? To the AFC, where the Packers would not have to see him in the playoffs until a Super Bowl. Nowhere else, in the eyes of GB management.
So, who in the AFC needs a QB? The Patriots and Colts are definitely out. The Titans, Jaguars, Chargers, Bengals, Browns, Steelers and even the Broncos have good quarterbacks.
Who's left? The Dolphins, Bills and Jets in the East. The Ravens in the North. Maybe the Texans in the South. And the Chiefs and Raiders in the West.
Out of those teams, the ones that look like they are a QB away from the playoffs include PERHAPS the Bills, Jets, Ravens, Texans and Chiefs. They all have holes, but in the NFL, a bad team can turn it around quickly. Out of those five will come Brett's best chance to play.

minn would not become a SB contender nor are they even close. i GAURUNTEE they will not beat the packers this year nor make the playoffs. detroit could have a 10-6 year, GB will be around 10-6 too 12-4 and minn around 7-9 to 9-7 TOPS. chicago will ride devin hester into atleast 3rd place in the NFC north. greenbay has a sh*tload of talent WITHOUT favre, and thts comin from a hardcore favre fan. well be fine, AR is a great scrambling QB, and he has 2 young recievers and a young teight end to bond with, along with donald driver, a potential HOF. ... tell it like it is...i think it SHOULD be buffalo(jus because i live close to there and they really only need favre. edwards isnt goin ANYwere.) but i cannot see him in anothr uniform...

Brett has retired and unretired twice already this off-season. That constitutes quite a lot more than "a little indecisiviness" as someone above called it. But hey, Brett can be as flaky as he wants. Any player can. But management can't. They've told Aaron this is his team and they will and shoulc stick to that, despite what Brett wants. It doesn't matter if Brett is better. Management has to stick to their words or lose the ability to lead the rest of the players on the team. If Brett can flop around for months and then get his way, the precedent is set for all other players to consider behaving the same way. Management cannot let that happen. Management sticking to its guns and is whats best for this team. Unless TT/MM just want to quit and let Brett take over entirely. Brett needs to remember his place and if he is still a Packer, he needs to accept a new #2 role. If Aaron stinks it up, then Brett's back in. But Aaron gets his shot.
None of this even mentions month of offensive planning with Aaron in mind instead of Brett. Way too much work undone if Brett is allowed to come back and take over.
PS: An open competition between the two would also be renigging on TT/MMs behalf. And they won't do it. Good for them!

Favre has been retiring and unretiring since 2005-6. The Packers kept coming back to him and talking him out of it. NOW, they just can't get rid of him. Perhaps we've created a monster of sorts that can't die! This may be a job for the Avengers of Marvel comics fame.

Gut-slinger -- completely agree with you!!
DJRox -- not sure Favre would make Minny a SB contender, but at least the Vikes QB position would be drastically improved
Tell It Like It Is -- very true, with all the hype around this issue, there hasn't been much talk about an AFC suitor (imagine Favre in a Dolphins helmet)

What I meant to say: Chicago w/ Farve better than GB w/out? Yes. You're somking cheap crack.. Compare the receivers. Compare the linebackers. Compare the OFFENSIVE LINE. Are you kidding me? Wow. Compare the freaking secondary and D-line for that matter. GB wins every category. I say again, "Wow". Serious cheap crack. And Ryan Grant vs their rookie? Wow, I say. Wow.

What I'm saying is I disagree with you on that one JDRox!! :-)
Farve to Minney would seriously concern me, however. There is no telling how that team is going to shake out w/ all the new players, but if they all work out according plan (BIG IF) Minney could be scary. And with Farve slingin. Seriously scary.
But, thank goodness, TT won't let that happen.
