Yankees, Red Sox chasing Pirate

As many as a dozen teams now have inquired about Pirates reliever Damaso Marte, and he might be the most-sought left-handed reliever in a market hungry for that commodity. The others being shopped are the Rockies' Brian Fuentes and the Royals' Ron Mahay. The Cardinals are in on Marte, as are the Yankees, Mets, Rays and Red Sox.

I want Bay and Marte. Set up a block buster Mo. They not going to sign Doumit in a couple of years. Send them Anderson and some combination of outfileders which doesn't include Ankiel or Ludwick. Schumaker and Rasmus are expendable in this deal.

This isn't new news, but I want Marte so bad. The last great shut-down left hand specialist we had was Mike Stanton. Marte solves a big problem in the bullpen immediately. I hope Cashman for once doesn't just talk and actually does something with this guy. They keep talking about him and wanting him yet can never get it done.

CardsFan, they aren't gonna want to trade their biggest name (Bay) to a division rival. At least I wouldn't. Unless the Cardinals blow them away with an offer.

For some reason Pittsburgh hate him. I had a Pittsburgh fan tell me last night, after he had hit 2 homers and drove in 5, that even if Bay had 200 rbi's he'd still suck. I don't get it. Rasmus and Anderson are both legitimate top prospects. Anderson's in the Future Games again, Rasmus isn't because of a groin sprain.

I think they don't like him because he hasn't been a superstar like he was starting to look like earlier in his career. I guess they were looking for him to save the franchise. And the team still hasn't made a dent in playoff contention. But that's not his fault.

Agreed being the face of a failed franchise is a thankless job.

Agreed, being the face of a failed franchise is a thankless job. I think he'll be even better with someone like Pujols in front of him. I salivate when I think of an outfield of Bay, Ankiel, and Ludwick for the next 5 years.

July 13, 2008  10:05 AM ET

Why doesn't the post ever show up until you post it again?

July 13, 2008  10:09 AM ET

Bay would be a great fit for the Mets also. The Cardinals need a bullpen more than hitting don't they?

And yeah, posting comments gets tricky sometimes.

July 13, 2008  10:13 AM ET

Thats why I want Marte too! We especially need lefty relief. We haven't had a decent one since Steve Kline.

July 13, 2008  10:34 AM ET

The Pirates will trade within their division. It's not like they expect to contend anyway. Send the Pirates an outfielder, a pitching prospect and a case of Bud Light for Marte.

July 13, 2008  10:34 AM ET

The "Bad news Brewers" should be in the mix. Their pitching staff other than Sheets and CC just plain stinks.

Even the Pirates aren't crazy enough to send those guys within the division. Marte will go to the highest bidder (probably not anybody in the Central) and Bay will go far far away. The new management can't afford to trade away their stud and have him come back to bite them again and again.

July 13, 2008  11:20 AM ET

If the Pirates trade Marte, they better actually get value for him which is something they haven't done in trades for a long time (Bobby Hill perfect example)!

July 13, 2008  11:31 AM ET

That arm angle does not look right. Unless it's the angle of the camera Marte will develop some arm problems. It looks too low.

July 13, 2008  11:41 AM ET

Hey Cardsfan, I wouldn't be so sure about your comment that Pittsburghers do not like Bay. Being from Pitt, we love Bay and don't want him traded. Perhaps your friend is a moron (esp after the comment about 200 RBIs, who the heck wouldn't love a guy that brought that to the table?)

July 13, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Good God, I hope Theo reflects on how badly every single NL pitcher he's acquired has been (Ok, aside from Schilling, but including Beckett at least his first season).....seriously, Seanez, Tavarez, Sauerbeck, Williamson, Suppan, Kim....NL pitchers usually don't adjust well to the AL, and when they do, it takes awhile. This will be ugly.

July 13, 2008  11:47 AM ET

Yankees could use another reliever to help set up Mo. Rivera. Marte is a pretty decent pitcher that could become beneficial for the yankees. Also they could trade for Nady or Bay to help resurrect that Yankee offense.

heybakes

He's not a friend, he was on a board. I've been reading the Bay isn't popular in Pittsburgh. That's great if he is popular. He should be popular.

Cardsfan pitt fans tell you Bay sucks because we are the only ones who actually watch our games.

Im a dyhard Buccos fan and watch a lot of our games and I will tell you right now, Bay sucks. He decided to "try" this year so hes doing semi decent. He Ks as much as he hits dude. Hes good at producing runs but his God awful defense definatley negates whatever he does at the dish. He has probably the worst arm in the MLB and has one of the worst reactions off the bat I've ever seen. He just looks unnatural out there like and infielder playing the outfield. GREAT run producer, bad contact and situational hitting, fielders dont get much worse.

But yeah, mostly everyone in the 412 hates Bay. I noticed most people are in love with McLouth now but my favorite is Capps.

With this rumor, who cares? You will get him when hes a free agent its not like the Pirates do anything to actually try to win.
