Spurs looking to get younger

The 13 players who suited up for the Spurs in their playoff run last season averaged 32.46 years old. That made them, if not quite as ancient as dirt, the oldest team in the NBA. Depending, in part, on what Gregg Popovich and his assistants see from first-round draft pick George Hill, who is 22, and a group of equally young players who will put their skills on display in summer league games in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City over the next nine days, the Spurs figure to be significantly younger when the 2008-09 regular season begins. On opening night, the Spurs could suit up a lineup with an average age under 30.

I don't think you need to be a young team to be able to win.
In my opinion, experience and skills are all it matter.

it is an odd year do not count out the Spurs!!!!! 4 of the last 5 odd year titles went to S.A. Manu needs to be healthy though.

July 13, 2008  09:47 AM ET

Get young how?? Take Viagra?? Horry wants to return, they can only get OLDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

July 13, 2008  09:54 AM ET

it's not old it's.... called being a seasoned veteran. thought they did rather well last year. how many other teams would love to be in the conference finals.

July 13, 2008  10:03 AM ET

The Spurs know that Duncan will be gone very soon so I guess they are getting prepared for that..

I didn't make up that 'OLD" "YOUNG" thing dude. Its SA themselves wanting to get "young" !! I'm just stating the obvious that with "oldies" like Horry, Vaughn returning, they can't get young. Weather they can win or lose is totally different. BOS won being not-too-young as well.

July 13, 2008  10:11 AM ET

Duh, this isnt news

Yeah who doesnt know this? And with a few fresher legs off the bench, this team could easily become favorites. Tim Duncan's the oldest at like what.. 32? Plus his game doesnt require much athletic ability so I think he'll still be effective for several more years. Tony's only 26 and in his prime years and if Manu's ankle is fine after the olympics, their big three is still as dangerous as ever.

July 13, 2008  11:20 AM ET

but boston had alot more youth than spurs do...

July 13, 2008  11:23 AM ET

One simple name Josh Smith with is defencive minded game, his athletic drives to the hoop and plus he as young as it gets. If the Spurs pass on a player like this they will fall further behind.

July 13, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Spurs cant acquire Smith

Geez

July 13, 2008  11:32 AM ET

Duncan and Manu are not that old... Mutombo is old. PJ Brown is old.

Or in basketball terms, Old guys would be Ben Wallace, Shaq, Mike Finley, Grant Hill & Sam Casell

Why are people keep saying Tony Parker is old when he's only 26. The Spurs core still has it and it only takes a few moves to upend the rest of the league.

It scary (for the Lakers et al) and it could happen since they are known to be excellent decision makers.

July 13, 2008  11:32 AM ET

They cant afford him and they have nothing to offer in a sign and trade

July 13, 2008  11:56 AM ET

YOU THINK? Man, the spurs should call themselves "the team that farts dust."

Its about time, but what else are they going to do? Get older?

July 13, 2008  01:46 PM ET

These guys were dragging they are old !!!!!! Duncan, Manu, r past their prime!! Parker cant play the drive and kick game because he's breaing down which means he has to acquire a jump shot which he doesnt have!!! as a matter of fact No One on that team has a consitent jump shot!!!! The only reason why they got as far as they did is bcuz Phoenix doesnt play defense and the Hornets were too young!!!!! Diffrent story this year the Spurs will be 1st round exits!!!

July 13, 2008  02:55 PM ET

hey vaughn9, i like to say "we like our odds" (in reference to the odd years).

July 13, 2008  03:04 PM ET

In the Article it says the Spurs said they know why they lost last year but didn't attribute it to age. Well if not age then what? Many think they lost because they didn't have consistent outside shooting. I happen to believe it was lack of shooting too. If the Spurs are done with offseason moves, I don't see how they addressed the issue with outside shooting. Unless Mason is a true shooter they better pick one or maybe two of those rookies and get JR Smith in here. SHOOTERS Pop SHOOTERS!
