All-Star tribute for Steinbrenner

Now it can be told: When Bud Selig awarded the All-Star Game to Yankee Stadium for this year, a major factor in his decision was that it would also be a most fitting occasion to pay tribute to his longtime friend and frequent sparring mate, George Steinbrenner. Speaking by phone from his office in Milwaukee, the commissioner confirmed that when Yankee president Randy Levine first approached him about having the All-Star Game in the Bronx as a send-off for Yankee Stadium, he immediately thought about it being a dual tribute.

George could be an ****; but, he impacted the game in a way few owners have. He also restored the honor of the most successful sports franchise in the world. He deserves the honor.

Good lord. Even I have to admit this is insane. A tribute to Steinbrenner? What are they gonna do, blow up a giant plastic ayhole and lead the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade?

He has been a very controversial and outspoken owner but brought back pride to the yankees. Before him the team was getting by but he came in and put his money where his mouth was. And yes CardsFan2, I agree "restored the honor of the most successful sports franchise in the world."

18 post season appearances and 6 championships during his tenure as owner - show me another team that's done that. Sure he's a jerk, but his passion for winning and getting results is unmatched.

Selig was a sparring partner? How so? I hate the Yankees, but George made them a winner again. Selig was owner of the Brewers. What did they ever do? And as commish? Yeah, I guess he turned his head to the steroids issue, if that's sparring.

George has always been controversial, but he's all about winning. He's directed some very stupid moves, but his goal was always to put a competitive team on the field and put butts in the seats. During his ownership he has been able to do both.

I was lucky to attend the final Yanks home spring training game this year with some of my family. We did not know this, but a ceremony was planned that day to officilaly change the name of the field from "Legends Field" to "George M. Steinbrenner Stadium." The Yankees had worked with the local governement to formally make this change and one of the main reasons is all of the civic and charity work that George and the Yanks had done over the years in the Tampa area. It was quite a scene. George and his famly road around the field in golf carts and when they got to the outfield they pulled a tarp off to reveal the new name.

This was a great moment. My Dad has been a yankee fan for life and he later said to me how touching it was. Here is a guy who swore that man's name up and down (especially during the 80s) but had also realized that he is the greatest owner in sports.

I would love to see the Yanks win it all this year for Steinbreener (also the last year in the stadium), but like him or not, Steinbrenner has been great for the Yanks and for the MLB.

I think the best tribute would be George Costanza clips with George S. from the Sienfeld TV series !!!

They should give the tribute to Hank Steinbrenner for never shuting up

More like 'bought' back pride.

Should the Yankees pay tribute to Herr Steinbrenner? Sure. It would be insane not to.

Should MLB spend time and resources to pay tribute to the father of Hank and Hal? Absolutely not. Sorry, Yankees fans, the All-Star Game is about the players and the game of baseball, not a love fest for Bud Selig's owner pals.

Hey, Milli Vanilli did something for music that no one has done since. Let's induct them into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame!!
