What about Tiger's caddie?

Tiger Woods is out for the season recovering from knee surgery, so that means his caddie, Steve Williams, is out of work. Caddies are generally paid about 7% to 10% of a player's winnings, so Williams will miss out on six figures worth of salary in the absence of Woods. As caddies are a close-knit group, Williams' fellow loopers decided to take up a collection for their now unemployed colleague. At the Travelers Championship three weeks ago, they posted a sign asking for donations to the "Steve Williams Benevolent Fund." Apparently they figured Williams didn't need much help because the donation jar was a shot glass.

I believe Bushwood is looking for a few good caddies!

Steve Williams has more money than most of the tour pros.

July 13, 2008  10:26 AM ET

Yep. The whole sidekick thing has really paid off for this joker

This is plain stupid. I think SI posted this debate (How is it "Truth or Rumor?" that we all know willie isn't dirt poor) just to get people to complain about the obvious. The caddie of Tiger gets around 10% of the winnings of every tourney, plus all the cars that Tiger doesn't raffle off for his charities. Williams is a millionaire by now if he knows what to do with his money. If he isn't by now, he's a fool like SI.

I WONDER HOW MUCH THE CHOKE CHOKE MEISTER PHIL MICKELSON'S CAADDY MAKES? IF HIS BOSS IS ALWAYS CHOKING ON THE GOLF COURSE, I BET THE CADDY WOULD RATHER BE HIRED BY THE TIGER...

HI HELEN FROM KELLER!!

July 13, 2008  04:24 PM ET

I'd quit my job to be Tiger's caddie and I know nothing about caddying.

Hello muktech.

July 13, 2008  05:58 PM ET

You people don't get it !!! He is on a salary - he is not only his caddy but pep coach and much more - good for a mil. a year whether Tiger is on the course or not. He is Tiger's "binky" !!!

July 13, 2008  06:32 PM ET

Mickelson owes muktech money.

T&R is really stretching to find Tiger stories. They are paranoid that the Gold section will dry up completely if they don't run at least 2 Tiger stories a day.

July 14, 2008  03:10 AM ET

Williams also gets about 500k each year from NIKE as part of tigers endorsement package so I dont think he has much to worry about

July 14, 2008  08:51 AM ET

I remember reading before that Steve Williams is the highest paid athlete in New Zealand...and I am guessing that includes Scott Dixon (IndyCar driver) and all of their rugby and soccer players.

I particularly like how the donation jar was a shot glass. Nice to see that the caddies haven't lost their sense of humor.
