Jason Giambi confirmed Sunday that Major League Baseball asked him to participate in tonight's Home Run Derby even though he isn't in the All-Star Game. He declined, as he has said he would if not picked for the All-Star team.

Had enough of the porn-star mustache, I have.

Giambi is that pride or respect for not being chosen. Well if it helps your swing not to participate then maybe that is the silver lining to not having Arod or Giambi in the hr derby

He would have gone in the HR derby if the stache didn't need some much dang grooming. Forget the Derby, hit bombs in the second half of the season G!

i think that they need to change some of the rules they have for the Home Run Derby, I think Jason would have been a wonderful addition to the Derby but can see why he wouldn't want to participate if he wasn't elected to the All-Star game.

I think he would be good in the Homerun Derby.... his rounds would be very short and I could get to bed at a decent hour, maybe..... the HR Derby is pretty much a long painful snoozefest anyways, so w*tf cares?

Behold the power of the Stache.

It's amazing what admitting that you did something wrong will do.

July 14, 2008  10:21 AM ET

I mean, Giambi's invited to the Home Run Derby, and MLB won't let Clemens and Bonds clean the urinals at Yankee Stadium at that point.

Learn this lesson, kids. Take responsibility for your mistakes.

July 14, 2008  10:22 AM ET

Yankees **** I do not blame Giambi but I do blame A Rod for not participating ----

July 14, 2008  10:23 AM ET

So he doesnt want to take advantage of the little league right field porch? Whats wrong with him? Maybe Jeter should join the derby then.

its all because he's hitting to left field now. its taken 7 years and he's finally figured that out. The stache is allowing him to wait longer. Its all about wind resistence. He starts his swing at the same time but the think mass slows everything down so he can go the other way. Its science....look it up!

This year's All Star game is being played in the "House that Ruth Built" - historical Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. It is the last time any All Star game will be played here, as Yankee Stadium is scheduled for demolition right after the season end. The Home Run Derby in this year's All Star game could have generated some real excitement and entertainment for Major League baseball fans in general, and NY fans in particular. The AL All Stars have on their roster a Yankee that is arguably the one active player capable of chasing down Barry Bond's all time home run record. A-Rod is at home for the All Star Game, and the Home Run Derby at Yankee Stadium is a perfect opportunity for A Rod to showcase his home run hitting talents, and give MLB fans a taste of what might come over the next few years. But that is not going to happen. No, the self-centered one, has chosen to sit out the Home Run Derby in his home park. It is a sad commentary for baseball that the last All Star game ever to be played at Yankee stadium will be lacking ANY Yankee participant in the Derby, and in particular, will be missing the Yankee slugger that is purportedly chasing the MLB HR record. A-Rod has zero respect for his team; for the Yankee history; for the House that Ruth built, for MLB, or for the fans. All he cares about is boinking Madonna and getting paid if he passes Bond's home run record. This is both disheartening and PATHETIC. The once proud Yankee dynasty will die with the fall of Yankee Stadium at the end of this year. It is a sad day for Major League Baseball and for the Yankees and their fans.

Repprts of the Yankees demise seem a bit premature...but enjoy it.

July 14, 2008  11:09 AM ET

Maybe A-rod is all about winning games and doesn't want to screw with his swing, maybe, just maybe this is a move out of respect for the team and not his individual accolades, maybe that is a little different perspective.

The field for the home run derby this year is HORRIBLE! Someone bring back the juice quick!

July 14, 2008  11:58 AM ET

Field, Meaning the participants!

Is he worried about steroids testing?

July 14, 2008  01:25 PM ET

I'm no fan of Mustachio, but, after A-Rod bails, now "The Juiced One" is turning down the opportunity to represent the host Yankees in the HR Derby at the last season in Yankee Stadium...

So, basically, The House That Ruth Built (on HR's, mind you) will have no Yankees representation? That makes absolutely no sense. Surely, this is one of the most boneheaded Giambi moves, right up there with Jeremy (a/k/a Fredo) choosing not to slide into homeplate in the ALDS in 2001...

July 14, 2008  03:53 PM ET

Maybe MLB should have asked Varitek to step down from the team, that way they could have found a spot for Giambi...then he would have accepted the offer.

July 14, 2008  04:32 PM ET

maybe some of the "so called" all stars that don't belong there should step down and let some players that do belong there play. LIke Giambi, because of the year he is having the yankee's aren't as bad off as they could be. with arod, posada, damon, all the pitchers who have gone on the DL he is the one that hasnt been on there after all the troubles he has had the last couple of years i think he should be on the team for the season he is having this year. players like big papi who have been hurt shouldn't be VOTED in when they can play, Varitek has sucked **** all year, should be a reserve, and do they really need12 pitchers.. i don't really think so..
