Major Red Sox deal unlikely

Should Theo Epstein makes an addition or two to the Red Sox roster as the July 31 trading deadline approaches, the hunch here is that they will be the kind of deals that get lost in the agate type. Maybe he'll send a C-list prospect or two to San Diego for one of the Padres' countless middle relievers. Or take a flyer on someone like Cleveland's Rafael Betancourt, a quality pitcher having a horrendous year. And a stopgap at shortstop could be added to the shopping list if Jed Lowrie somehow fails to live up to Julio Lugo's high standard. But baseball logic suggests there will be nothing approaching a blockbuster this year, no deals reminiscent of the franchise-altering swap of Nomah in '04 or even the Eric Gagne debacle of '07. Part of that is because the asking price for even mediocre "talent" is so steep (someone is going to grossly overpay for Colorado lefty Brian Fuentes), and the Red Sox are right in their reluctance to deal an asset such as Michael Bowden for an attempt at a quick fix.

Of course, this article won't prevent T&R from speculating over the next two weeks on countless 'imminent' blockbuster RedSox moves.

I wonder if the Red Sox rumors between now and 7/31 will be as plentiful as the Roberts to the Cubs ones were earlier this season?

Someone please tell me the Boston Globe is being sarcastic when they say is Lowrie going to live up to Lugo's high standards. If not the Boston Globe just passed the Enquirer with crazy talk.

Could be or might be.... nothing but rumors... but.. who is in first place??!!! Go Redsox!!!!

July 14, 2008  09:04 AM ET

Don't deal another good prospect for someone that may or may not contribute. Gange is the best example, not worth the price.

Julio Lugo's high standard??? Is that for real? Does the high standard include beating your wife? I swear, if Lugo is the standard, then Boston has lowered its expectations substantially.

Field Marshall Sunny Day | 07/14/08, 09:06 AM

It was sarcasm.

FMSD,

The Julio Lugo comaparison was completely sarcastic. Juilo is having a terrible year in Boston and it is being magnified due to of the absence of other weaknesses with the team. Believe me, no one is Boston would be sorry to JL go.

Rent a playa is getting less appetizing..... teams can afford to hold on to a player, lose them to free agency and gain some compensatory picks in the first round..... so, unless the price is right, teams would often rather have the picks over some journeymen players....

I agree the comment was sarcastic, but Lugo is hitting .268/.355/.330. Certainly nothing to brag about, but you're not going to get a stopgap shortstop who is going to produce any better than that. Until they feel Lowrie is ready, Lugo is as good as its going to get for the Sox at SS.

They shouldn't of signed his wife beatin' **** up in Boston anyway. What kind of asylum are they running up there??? A DH who wears "I love black people" t-shirts, A LF who makes phone calls in the middle of innings, a 2B who smacks his wife around like a pinata, and a 3B who one testicle away from being called Michelle.

I'd like to see Lugo's bases empty/RISP splits. I bet they're night and day.

Sunny the "I love black people" t-shirt worn by Papi is actually a statement. It is a reference to the supposed rift between blacks and latinos in this country. It was meant as a way to say that he is not a part of that nonsense.

Yeah. After reading Field Marshall's post I started singing, "one of these things is not like the others. One of these things just doesn't belong..."

All of the planets are once again aligned. The Sox sit atop their rightful throne as division leaders, the Rays are losers, and the Yanks are........well they Yanks.
