Is Benfica done with Adu?

With rumors already swirling about Freddy Adu's potential departure from Benfica, the Portuguese club added even more fuel to that fire with its imminent signing of Argentine playmaker Juan Pablo Aimar. Aimar should slide right in as the natural replacement for retired Portuguese star Rui Costa. While it doesn't necessarily mean Adu is done at Benfica, the fact that the club tried (and failed) to sign Diego Buonanotte from River Plate leaves you wondering just where Adu stands with Benfica. There have been various rumors linking Adu to loan moves everywhere from Italy to France, and Aimar's arrival suggests that if Adu wants to see more than mop-up duty he will need to move elsewhere.

Maybe Adu will go back to the MLS, although he's been playing very well in Europw. (Portugal) Benfica

July 14, 2008  08:01 AM ET

No, he won't come back to America. Are you crazy? He hasn't played all that great because he hasn't played much. Freddy will probably go to Monaco. They are a good side and I really expect him to be a key player in the 2010 World Cup. Good luck Freddy, America is behind you.

Actually, he's looked pretty good in the few appearances he's had. However, the rapid shuffling of Benfica managers recently has made the club and whoever the present manager is feel the pressing need for better results RIGHT NOW, and that mentality isn't conducive to developing young talent for the future.

Adu looked very impressive during Olympic qualifying, and was even fairly sharp in his recent senior team appearances. The guy isn't in bad form right now, so that isn't why Benfica hasn't been giving him playing time.

The long and short of it is that Benfica is simply a club in turmoil atm, and it's really too bad, because that turmoil is causing mismanagement which is going to result in them foolishly allowing an intriguing new talent to get away from them.

1 of 3 things will happen

1) Adu sticks it at Benfica, continues to learn and strides to improve his play ang get PT at a prestegious club

2) Adu gets loaned out and gets valuable experience actually playing

3) Sold to the highest bidder, looks like Monaco is calling...

as long as he continues to grow, he'll get the PT... he's too good to be riding pine .... lets remember he's only going to be 19... its understandable for a new manager to be cautious about putting him in... he'll get the time soon enough regardless of where he goes...

YOU CAN ALWAYS COME HOME, FREDDY! YOU'LL GET PLENTY OF PLAYING TIME HERE!

July 14, 2008  11:16 AM ET

His career arc so far is pretty standard for a player his age. Benfica keeps him at the home club for his first year abroad so that he can learn the quality and standards expected of him from the club that has a long term interest in his future, then gets loaned out to get playing time for his second year. Clubs don't like loaning out young players in their first year abroad because the club loaning the player has no long term interest in the player's progress. So they can let things slip and not make as much of an effort to ensure the player is properly adjusting.

He's probably not done at Benfica. The signing of Aimar definitely means that Adu won't be getting starting time and that he will be relegated to his substitutes role, which to me is fine.

If he leaves Benfica it will probably be by loan to get him the playing time somewhere else instead of sitting on the bench.

July 14, 2008  11:55 AM ET

Let him go to Monaco. He will get playing time in addition to playing for a club that could challenge for a spot in the UEFA Cup. Even the UCL isn't out of reach, as Ligue One is so unpredictable (other than Lyonnaise dominance).

We forget that Freddy isn't even 20 years old yet because he has been around for so long. He is playing very well for the national side at the moment and should play a pivotal role in the world cup. He needs PT in order to prepare for the big international tournaments and he won't be assured of that at Benfica.

July 14, 2008  12:13 PM ET

Even if Benfica lets him go, I believe that their are plenty of teams that have an interest in acquiring Adu. He is still very young.

July 14, 2008  12:21 PM ET

He'll likely be loaned out. He's looked good in his appearances so far and learning from Aimar can only be a good thing.

On another note: he's NOT EVEN 20?!?!?1 Holy crap! Hehe...

July 14, 2008  01:23 PM ET

Go to Monaco or another tope French club

A move to a big dutch club would be the best move, they also excel in developing talent

But he could stay at Benfica and come off the bench, he still has years to develop

Sometimes I get the feeling that if Freddy with his current skills were from say, Argentina, France, even Mexico, he'd get more playing time. I know there's lots of quality at Benfica but I bet his nationality holds him back a bit over there. Otherwise this doesn't make sense. The last 5 or 6 times I've watched him play he's made some good things happen and has generally been the most dangerous player on his team.

MadridistAmericano- well thats something ive said about any american playing abroad... there may be instances where they are better, but they have to perform 5X better in order to really get the nod.... but i think it'll take consistant play over the next decade to drop that idea

July 14, 2008  04:26 PM ET

Not very great news for the kid, or America. But hopefully he goes to a better club if he does leave. I doubt that though, as he barely gets a chance to play at Benfica.

July 14, 2008  04:34 PM ET

Freddy just needs to hang in there a bit longer. He is in the right place, it is the right time, and sooner of later he will get his break; be it a loan, a transfer, or a starting job. When any one of those three things happen; it'lll be big time for Freddy.

I like it that Altidore is staying with Villareal as well. Those two, up front, in 2010? Me say hell yes!

July 14, 2008  06:48 PM ET

he justs needs to go some place that will give him playing time, its not happening at benfica.

July 14, 2008  10:47 PM ET

Adu should stay in Benfica. Quque Sanchez Flores (Benfica's new coach) is willing to try out young and new players.

Altidore will go through the same thing in Villareal. He's behind Nihat (currently injured), Rossi, Llorente and Guille Franco. The only edge Jozy has on these guys is his physique.

Nevertheless, its best that these players fight for their position in clubs known for developing. And these guys are still teens.

July 15, 2008  11:37 AM ET

he should look to go to a smaller club who give youngsters a chance.or maybe ask benfica to loan him out for season.

July 15, 2008  01:24 PM ET

Adu needs to have a big Olympic Tournament and his stock will soar once again...I wouldn't be shocked to see him wind up being a hot property if he can produce in Beijing.

He's at the wrong team, trust me benfica is a wreck train. If he went to Sporting he would get more play time. Sporting has a great policy for youth players.
