Willis changing unique delivery

When Dontrelle Willis soared to popularity with the Florida Marlins, he did so with a distinctive delivery that featured a high kick of his right leg as he whipped the ball toward home plate. Now that image may exist in memory only. Willis acknowledged during a 10-minute session with reporters Saturday that he is currently attempting to change his mechanics through work with the organization's coaches. He did not provide specifics of what the new delivery looks like. "When you're trying to change your mechanics," the Tigers left-hander said at one point, "you have to take it one day at a time."

one day at a time...is Schnider his coach????

Dontrelle, we hardly knew ye.

How did this just completed weekend series against the Twins taste, Tiger fan?

July 14, 2008  08:54 AM ET

Bitter, very bitter.

Even my attendance at Saturday's game didn't help the Tigers. I have to hand it to the Twins, they are always competitive, and usually seem to have our number. The worst thing, is that I can't hate the Twins, they seem like a good bunch. If they win the Central this year after the players that they have lost, Gardenhire should be the Manager of the year.

Changing his delivery has worked really well for Mark Mulder

For years they said this guys delivery was a train wreck and an injury waiting to happen. Now, he just sucks. Florida knew what they were doing when they dumped him off as part of the Cabrera deal.

All the kings horses and all the kings men can't put that delivery together again, starting from scratch might be the best idea, but there are no gaurantees either way.

It's not like he had overpowering stuff. His distracting the batters was the best hing he had going for him. I don't know how a standard delivery will work out for him.

July 14, 2008  10:19 AM ET

The D-Train will be back. Next year probably. But that Florida-Detroit deal certainly looks different now, huh?

July 14, 2008  10:19 AM ET

Better change something....cuz you get ROCKED!

July 14, 2008  10:22 AM ET

it was inevitable...the windup won't work with all that belly flab.

Yeah, you know you're delivery is working for you when it lands you on the DL, like Chris Carpenter. This is a real shame for Dontrelle though. Hopefully he'll gain something back in the next year or two.

Has anyone besides me seen that interview with Mike Marshall on HBO Real Sports a few months ago? He won a Cy Young in the '70s, but since then he's developed his own pitching motion that's supposed to keep pitching injuries to a minimum. He knows his stuff, he has a degree in sports medicine. It's just a shame that he probably won't get invited by any major league teams because he would put every pitching coach in the majors today out of a job. If his motion were popularized it would require such a huge overhaul. Marshall has a lot to contribute, but unfortunately he'll likely spend the rest of his days working with minor league players

bonzo...I didn't see that interview, but I did see the SI article on Lincecom. Perhaps Marshall and Lincecom's dad should get together. they could revolutionize pitching.

The thing I've noticed over the last ten years is the number of pitchers snapping off the fastball to get more movement. Now they are putting tremendous pressure on thieir arm and shoulder each and every pitch instead of only with the breaking stuff.

"Willis Changing Unique Delivery"...

Wait, you mean he won't be delivering those pizzas in 30 minutes or less anymore??!! Damn...

July 14, 2008  01:33 PM ET

I want it to be part of the record that the Cub's had nothing to do with his pitching problems!

July 14, 2008  02:34 PM ET

willis's delivery wuz siick but it didn't get the job done so it is good that he is changing it

He makes it look so easy
He looks so clean
He moves like gods
Immaculate machine
He makes me think about
All of these extra movements I make
And all of this herky-jerky motion
And the bag of tricks it takes
To get me through my working day
One-trick pony
