Manchester City have tested AC Milan's resolve by tabling a mega-money bid for Barcelona superstar Ronaldinho. The Daily Mail claims that City emailed an offer to Barca last night, casting doubt over recent reports that the Brazilian playmaker was on the verge of signing for Milan. The 28-year-old is certain to leave Camp Nou this summer after being placed on the transfer list by new coach Josep Guardiola, alongside Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto'o and Portuguese star Deco.

Wow. I never thought that Ronaldinho would go to Man City. It's all about the money!

July 14, 2008  07:58 AM ET

No surprise here. Man. City shouldn't and aren't going to sit back and let AC Milan have him. If it happens great, if it doesn't great. It will be fine no matter what.

Is this story done yet? It's been on this site for 2 months straight now in some way, shape or form.

July 14, 2008  09:55 AM ET

Take him, please, we don't need him. Also to end these ridiculous stories!

July 14, 2008  10:06 AM ET

Mercy! Please just go to Man City and get this over with!

July 14, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Yeah the stories hacve been interesting, I would like to see him in Man, City actually.

July 14, 2008  11:46 AM ET

Money talks and BS walks...

July 14, 2008  11:48 AM ET

Man. City really wants him but the issue here is will he want to go to City? So far, he doesn't and is holding out for Milan, Chelsea, or any other big club to make a play.

July 14, 2008  11:50 AM ET

Ronaldinho doesn't want to go to Man City and he shouldn't have to. I think this is what Sepp Blatter was referring to as "modern slavery" rather than forcing players to see out their contracts. It's forcing players to play WHERE THEY DONT WANT TO PLAY. In this regard, I agree with Sepp. Ronaldinho wants to play for AC Milan. He wants to play in a league that appreciates solitary playmakers in addition to playing in a Latin culture. Oh and did I mention that he wants to play for title contender? I highly doubt that Ronaldinho, or the rest of the world, think that Man City will displace one of the Big Four anytime soon. And I don't think Ronnie views himself as the key to put them over the top.

My advice to Pep and Txiki, let Ronnie play for Milan. Too bad they need the money to pay for Hleb AND Adebayor. They might even use the extra finds from this massive bid to make a new offer for Arshavin, despite his newfound interest in Arsenal.

July 14, 2008  11:58 AM ET

I know, I know, god forbid that anyone with great talent ever play for anyone but the top 3 or 4 teams from the top leagues in the world. Probably the best place for Ronnie to go is Man City, where he will be guarenteed some strong minutes. Unless he turns things around along his waistline, he'll be riding pinne at Milan.

PS. Celtics fan: when you said the stories "hacve been interesting," Was that a "have" or a "haven't"?

July 14, 2008  12:09 PM ET

D-wreck

I appreciate the comment, but I disagree. Ronnie is the type of player who will be motivated by playing for a team that he likes. He will relish the chance to play for Milan and put in the work necessary to gain minutes. Imagine this formation:

Dida
Maldini Zambrotta Nesta Jankulovski
Gattuso Pirlo Flamini
Kaka Ronaldinho
Pato

INSANITY. Plus with subs like Seedorf and Inzaghi, they should be wonderful. If I were Ronnie, I'd get my butt in shape to play alongside Kaka in attacking midfield. It would be a great opportunity to mend the rumored rift between the two as well.

July 14, 2008  12:15 PM ET

Sorry Pantherfan i cannot agree with you, as much as i love Dinho and am a huge fan of him, the team and the league is bigger than 1 guy. Too many players in too many sports think it's all about them and what they want and where they want to go. But the fact is that's why you sign a contract and basically then become that teams employee, if i was to tell my boss i don't want to work in my desk and i want his and i don't want this assignment i want a different one, that's not going to fly. And the saddest thing about Dinho is he's not even in match form, so till he can PROVE he truly wants to be great again the rest is just lip service. Also if Milan were serious about getting him then they would have made an offer already, i highly doubt they will at this point...

So what happened to the part where Mila is supposedly stunned?

If true, this move is nothing short of subtle genious in the part of Man City. With an increasing bid, Barcelona will not allow Milan to sneak by and pry Ronaldinho with a low offer. With City's higher bid, Barcelona would reasonably demand Milan to up their offer as well. Milan has already stated that Barcelona's demands are too high, and will most likely not increase their offer any further. As Barca will not leave money on the table and go with a low Milan offer, they will force Ronaldinho to choose Barca or Man City. Great game-theory move by Man City.

July 14, 2008  12:27 PM ET

Is it just me or does he look really tubby in that goal.com photo?

If he goes to Man City, that'd be fine. Milan have lots of talent already and are only pursuing him reluctantly (from what I've read). Man City really wants him and if he wants to feel appreciated no matter what, he'll go there.

July 14, 2008  01:09 PM ET

For the last time, Ronaldinho's NOT going to Man City! I'm quite sure that if Milan offered Barcelona 15-20mil that Barcelona would eventually relent and accept the offer. Barcelona indeed wants Ronnie to leave out the front door and have as amicable a split as possible - and to that end Barcelona is willing to accept slightly less to satisfy Ronnie's wishes. But at the same token they aren't just going to give him away either! If Barcelona feel that Milan aren't making a legitimate offer for him, or believe that Milan are trying to 'low ball' them because of Ronnie's preference, then Barcelona are well within their right to agree to terms with Man City on the transfer.

July 14, 2008  01:15 PM ET

Well, Laporta said today that him and his agent are leaning toward City instead of Milan now..

July 14, 2008  01:17 PM ET

He's in love with Milan, but hes gonna get more $$$ at City probably

And neither are in the Champions League

Does he want to help start a potenital powerhouse in City?

Galliani is flying into Barcelona as we speak

July 14, 2008  01:34 PM ET

Is this suggesting that Barca would turn down the Milan offer? I don't understand.

In any case, he and Elano in the same midfield would be pretty impressive.

July 14, 2008  01:44 PM ET

with the players they've pcked up and the look at adding Friedel, City is looking to become quite a solid side... and if ronaldinho joins up i wouldnt be surprised if City pushes forward into the top 4.... eventually one of the 4 are going to break

July 14, 2008  02:05 PM ET

And one of those 4 to break next year will be Arsenal. Mark my words. BarcaForLife--what makes you so sure that Ronnie won't got to Man City? Do you have some inside info, or are you just being adamant for other reasons? When I look at the big pocketbooks available to Man City now, it looks to me that they are truly intent on signing the best players they can find. The "Big Club Nepotism" that goes on continuesly, and all the player swapping between them is just ridiculous frankly. I'd like to see a big player take a change on a growing team, and make them great. Unfortunately, what I would "like to see" in many regards, doesn't matter much.
Pantherfan: Ronnie may be more motivated with a trip to Milan, but his pockets might be fatter in Man City. I dunno. This story seems to not have an end. And speaking of fatter, have you seen this before and after photo?
