Veteran offensive coordinator Paul Hackett is expected to join the Raiders as a consultant, Bay Area News Group staff writer Jerry McDonald reported. Hackett last worked in the NFL for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also has worked for the Cleveland Browns, 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, Denver Broncos, and New York Jets during his long career. Raiders senior executive John Herrera confirmed that Raiders coach Lane Kiffin and Hackett have talked about a consultant's job.

The next head coach of the Raiders... Paul Hackett.

Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! You have got to be kidding me. Paul Hackett!?!?!!? The guy who destroyed college programs like Pitt and then my beloved USC in the late 80's and early 90's before embarassing himself in the NFL?? Please let this be another bogus, summer-time desperate sports writer rumor mongering mistake. Then again as a Raider fan, I have to believe only Oakland would do something as STUPID as this. I've already bee through the Hackett disgrace as a Trojans fan years ago. I'm no sure I can take it again with the Raiders.

Paul Hackett,,,then Testaverde in a comeback. Just what any offense needs.

Consult ?
are they trying to make a bad offense WORSE?
that's like consulting pacman jones on how to be a good upstanding citizen

Consultation=No Responsibility

MY WORDS EXACTLY!

Hackett has been just about everywhere and you have to ask why he has stayed long really anywhere. Amazing resiliency.

July 14, 2008  04:16 PM ET

he's a "hack"

July 14, 2008  04:17 PM ET

Last worked for TAMPA? Like, how many years ago? I can't follow everyones careers, but at least say how long he's been out of football. Then again.....it is Oakland.

July 14, 2008  04:18 PM ET

Okay, I got it "Hack" Hackett.....just figured it out, my bad.

July 14, 2008  04:38 PM ET

He's been, among other things, a QB coach and "guru," a special consultant, an offensive coordinator (many times) and a head coach (2x?) in college. As they say, a jack of all (offensive) trades and a master of none. But he does keep reemerging.

(PS "...you have to ask why he has *not* stayed long really anywhere.")

Buddy Ryan then comes back to consult his son on how to run the D.

July 14, 2008  06:42 PM ET

At least Hackett & Kiffin have something in common, both were terrible at USC.

July 15, 2008  07:06 AM ET

It only gets worse for the Raiders...

July 20, 2008  12:28 AM ET

and in other news..........the raiders are going to suck again.
