CBS to replace Billy Packer
College basketball commentator Billy Packer, who has announced 34 consecutive Final Fours on network television and created a few controversies along the way, will not be returning to CBS for a 28th season, The Miami Herald has learned. CBS has decided to replace Packer, 68, with studio analyst Clark Kellogg on its lead announcing team. An announcement is expected Monday, but CBS representative Leslie Anne Wade confirmed the story Sunday night. CBS believed the time was right for a change and that Kellogg deserved a chance to work with Jim Nantz on the lead team. Packer, who had been going year to year with his contract, confirmed through a CBS official Sunday that he no longer will broadcast for the network but is pursuing other projects in basketball. Packer declined to comment further.

I saw the word 'Packer' in the title and I thought the endless 'Return of Favre' stories had now invaded the College section.

Will we miss Packer? I found him irritating. Packer often sounded to me like he thought himself bigger than the game and was too negative, endlessly repeating what a coach or team SHOULD be doing instead of what they were doing. Have to admit he mostly knew what he was talking about, but I won't miss him. However, Kellogg is too bland for my taste. Would rather have Jay Bilas in there.

Ok you anti-Billy Packer fans. You got what you wish for in getting Packer out of CBS. So go celebrate this all you want. I don't know how Clark Kellogg will do with Jim Nantz. Let's see how that plays out. But Packer will be miss .

Packer is a fool.. he routinely says asinine things and even when he gets called out or is proven dead wrong, he still thinks he's right. This happened about 15 years too late.. good riddance

As somebody who has had to endure this blowhard's 'commentary' during ACC broadcasts since the '70s, this news is about 20 years overdue. He is the most endlessly negative, self-important know-it-all on any network. Good commentators let the play on the court do the talking. He didn't do that.
Goodbye and good riddance, BP. Don't let the door hit you where the Good Lord split you.
Now, if ABC-ESPN will give Dick Vitale the ol' heave ho as well, college hoops'' broadcasts will be all the better for it.

This is long overdue. Yes, Packer is a student of the game of basketball and has deep roots in the historic ACC, but his overly-inflated ego and harsh commentary weren't needed. He was a role player at Wake Forest in the 60's when Duke and North Carolina were winning titles! At least Clark Kellogg brings some credibility as a player who was pretty good at Ohio State. Enjoy retirement, Packer. He was fortunate to enjoy such a long run with CBS.

It's about time! With the 2008-2009 Tarheel basketball team looking as strong as they are, i'm sure he would have had 25 reasons why they are not contenders for the national championship this year! Trust me CBS, you are better off without him!!!!! Go Heels!!!

I am not a big fan, but it'll certainly be different at Final Four time without his voice.

You know those days when you wake up and you just know something good is going to happen? And then you hear that your least favorite, pompous-dbag announcer is no longer going to be allowed to attempt to bring down one of the best events of the year?
Yeah, today was one of those days.

As a Carolina grad, this makes my day. The only potential down side is he will probably show up on the ACC network games more frequently now. Of course all of the officials in the country must be happy since he will no longer be doing their job from the sideline. I'm definitely looking forward to next year's March Madness.

like the above post, as a Carolina fan all i can say is it was about freaking time. his commentary towards Carolina over the past few years has overall been unnecessary, annoying and at times flat out untrue. case in point duke v. unc in chapel hill 2007. his comments following "the foul" were ridiculous. yes, it is the end of an era or whatever in college basketball, but im excited cbs is making a change.

It's about bloody time CBS took Packer off the air. He is nothing but a shill for the ACC, and Selection Sunday is never complete for me until I hear Packer while incessantly about the lack of ACC teams in the tourney. Love Clark Kellogg, this opportunity couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Somtimes, I'd get so angry with Packer and his pompous, know-it-all attidude, I'd turn off an otherwise good college basketball game. Another guy who made me change channels was Dennis Miller, when he was on Monday Night Football. Dreadful.....

best news yet for televised college basketball -- Kellogg can be a little too lecturing at times, but Packer was unbelievably egotistical and biased ... he'd pick a team or a coach or a conference at the start of each game and then ride that horse all game long, no matter what was happening on the court ...
