Islanders may send Nolan packing

Two months away from the start of training camp, the job status of Islanders coach Ted Nolan remains in serious doubt. The question of whether general manager Garth Snow and Nolan can continue to work together has been brewing since the middle of last season, but their tug-of-war over the direction of the franchise might be coming to a head. When Nolan shows up for rookie minicamp Monday, he and Snow will be face to face for the first time since the NHL draft in June. Contacted recently at the hockey camp he runs in Ontario, Nolan was asked if he's confident he will be coaching the Islanders when training camp begins in mid-September. "I'm confident in my ability to coach," Nolan said.

Who's wife is he sleeping with this time?

July 14, 2008  07:38 AM ET

I can't believe Nolan is going through this again. This guy must be a first-rate idiot. After getting black-balled, you would think he would be on his best behaviour... some guys just never learn.

July 14, 2008  08:27 AM ET

Nolan's a good coach, but you gotta get along with the man who runs the team. Anyone know what the problem is between the two?

July 14, 2008  08:57 AM ET

Already? But ... he's just getting warmed up!

Surely Ted Nolan must know better by now than to get into a pis*sing contest with a skunk! A very insecure skunk, I might add! Does Garth Snow want the coaching job too, or just feels threatened?

Maybe he refused to sleep with Garth's wife, PK!

July 14, 2008  09:52 AM ET

Or maybe he refused to sleep with Gart, DC?

Man, I dig PopKing's avatars.

Can't wait to see that Denver Spurs number again.

July 14, 2008  10:53 AM ET

The problam was mid season last year Snow wanted to bring up the Rookies Okposo etc. Nolan wanted to proactivly get some more scoring via trade. Snow won that battle and Wang agreed .Nolan wants extension if they are going to go the young route (rightfully so). He shouldnt be held accoutible for a rebuilding project.

July 14, 2008  12:12 PM ET

Nolan should let the GM worry about his own job. Why were they asking for his opinion anyways? Snow shouldnt have asked him in the 1st place. Let the coach, coach and let the GM do his OWN job. IF my owner asked me about which directiion the team should go,i'd say....."ask your GM. I'm the coach". Its as simple as that.

July 14, 2008  12:19 PM ET

Nolan is a good coach, but not strong developing the young players. He would not play Nillson, has not given Tambellini top line ice time. Sent down Campoli beggining of 06-07 after he played every game in 05/06. Nolan feels the need to reprove himself after what happened in the past. This is probably not the right team for him.

TSN reporting Nolan is out..

July 14, 2008  01:31 PM ET

If Nolan's out again, I think he's out for good. Sure, Snow's an unproven GM, but he is still the boss. And you can't say Muckler was unproven back in Buffalo! Two bosses, two conflicts, three strikes.

July 14, 2008  02:02 PM ET

Nolan has black-balled himself here. Is it so hard to keep your nose out of other peoples business? I'd be very surprised if he finds another coaching gig again. I hope he doesnt use the race card this time.

July 14, 2008  02:03 PM ET

I don't think he's out for good. He's way to good for that. And to be honest, who do you think have the most credibility of him and Snow? I mean come on, the team's runned by an owner who fired his GM 3 months after he hired him.

July 14, 2008  03:18 PM ET

Weak GM, hard to imagine he's a worse GM than he was a goalie.
Atrociously bad owner. Still dreaming of some never will be real estate project, when RE is the toilet anyway.

Anyone who doesn't agree with Wang or has independent thought is fired. It's happened time and time again. The organization is a disgrace to hockey, and more to their own history. It's like a King that becomes a homeless grifter 5 years later. Mistake after mistake was made and again today this team sinks to a new low. For years we put up with Mike Milbury hanging around because he always had his nose buried in between Wang's cheeks. You get someone like Neil Smith who doesn't want to be lead around on a collar, so you fire him a day later. So he replaces him with Snow Job knowing he will he will be a complete pushover and do exactly what he's told. It's never ending. Just fold the team, or sell them off, it's over. Time for the dog to be taken out back and shot in the head.

So now the race is on to find another "yes man" to placate Wang. Anyone with independent thought need not apply.

"Time for the dog to be taken out back and shot in the head"
Mshoots.

That was not brutal.

July 14, 2008  03:38 PM ET

Worst GM I've seen in a while and I'm a freaking Rangers fan. Nolan wasn't the problem; Snow was.

DP going to be able to make it through more than half the season this year? They got him til hes 40!

July 14, 2008  04:06 PM ET

Man... I feel kinda bad for all the dirt that was thrown around here after Muckler canned him. We've now had the same coach for 10 years and I couldn't be happier. "The Hardest Working Team In Hockey" may have seen some low point after he left.... but at least now you can realize exactly where the true problem is.

July 14, 2008  04:31 PM ET

Possibly Nolan wanted no part of a return of Yashin? Couldn't blame him if that's the case. Whims of an owner are not conducive to winning.

July 14, 2008  05:54 PM ET

Look for the Isles to ring up Torts now that they need a (good) coach.

Worst organization in sports. Worst building in sports. Worst fans in sports. Enough said
