Favre's possible Green Bay exit strategy

The most likely scenario would have Brett Favre petitioning the league for reinstatement and the Packers trading him to an AFC team, or at least an NFC team outside the division. Among the teams that fit that profile are the Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets, Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Redskins. The Packers' best-case scenario, in which Favre would've simply stayed retired, almost certainly won't happen. The Packers went so far as to send an intermediary down to Mississippi last week to try to talk Favre into staying retired, but their attempt failed. Favre would likely have high trade value, in part because of the draw he'd be for his new team's attendance and marketing endeavors, but whether the Packers could get a first-round pick for a player who'll turn 39 on Oct. 10 remains to be seen.

trade favre to the dolphins for jason taylor. then they can both stop complaining and we can ready for football season again instead of wasting coverage on the drama of multimillionaires.

Wasting coverage? Of what, crack cocain and failed drug tests?

Good one Vaughn. Reminds me of a movie about some old dude doing that.

They should cut him, so the vikings will get him and give him one more ring and tavaris another year to get better

Favre and Bus Cook will soon try to appeal to the masses as the victims in this scenario. Despite what appears to have been real attempts by the Packer to get Favre back in uniform this year. He reportedly, repeatedly told McCarthy that he couldn't guarantee 100% commitment to playing football (Favre has been quoted as hating to practice). Now we have to endure these histrionics. The Packers are protecting themselves against an "October epiphany" in which Favre realizes he doesn't love playing football and gets on that lawnmower back to Mississippi. Apologies to vaught9 for the use of the phrase.

Release him if you don't want him. You don't give 12 million a year to a backup QB.

July 14, 2008  08:44 AM ET

Brett, go home. This has seriously changed my view of Brett Favre. 6 months ago I was looking at him as an aging, yet still great quarterback who got to ride out into the sun with an established career behind him, a Super Bowl victory, and some Pro Bowls. Now he's coming off as some spoiled brat, and at almost age 40! "The 40-Year Old Spoiled Athlete" will be the sequel to 40-Year Old Virgin if this guy keeps it up.

Go home, Brett! Relax! Hang with the wife! Travel, see the world! Then come back and coach QBs!

That's crap, if the Pack had made "real attempts" to get Favre back, he'd be back. Not saying Brett couldn't have done some things different, but Ted Thompson has acted like a stuborn six year old girl with this issue.

Do all of you people really think that if Favre had held a news conference to talk about coming back, that no one whould have showed up? People keep complaining about what Favre has "done". What has he really done? He's kept fairely quiet and tried to work things out with the Pack behind the scenes. He didn't put the Pack in a bad place by announcing to the world, before telling the Pack, that he wanted to play. That would have put the Packers in even a stranger situation.

Look, the Packers are saying that Brett wanted to come back in March, then changed his mind. The Packers have stated (or at least the coach has stated) that he was in contact for weeks with Favre before this became public, and that Favre had stated his desire to play during those calls. My point is, just how is it that the Packers organization is acting like they've been caught off gaurd by this? And these comments, "well we took him at his word when he said he wanted to retire." Are you kiding me?

Yes, again, Favre could have done some things differently. But, taking Favre's possible return out of this - how can Packers' fans feel good about the leadership of the organization when they botch the handling of this so bad. Even casual fans "knew" that there was a good chance of Favre wanting to come back. For the Packers not to have a plan in place to handle the situation makes them look like foolish. Remember the Packer's web site gaff, when a page stating Favre's retirement was put on the web site, before his announcement? Well, why didn't they have a statement prepared in case Favre stated he wanted to come back? By being all secretive and not making any statements for over a week, the Packers organization made this situation much worse that it needed to be.

The Ravens or Jets look like the best possibilities. If I were the Packers, I'd be afraid to trade Brett to the Buccaneers or Panthers. That's a decision that could come back to bite them in the playoffs.

Do not believe anything management is aying.. they have egg on their face and are trying to explain this mess... after their actions it is very possible he could end up any where now... I believed the Vikes but now I think Miami is the front runner... if.. if.. if.. he returns.

i think its crappy what Brett has done to the fans and greenbay org, if you say your body has nothing left to give and retire you should stay retired stop pulling a Jordan and just stay gone.

July 14, 2008  09:11 AM ET

Go to the Rvens Brett and SHUT THE F*%# UP!

July 14, 2008  09:14 AM ET

Yup a str9 up trade for Jason Taylor then watch Favre blamed the Dolphins for not getting Randy Moss!!!!

July 14, 2008  09:14 AM ET

AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

THEY ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT THE WASHED UP OLD MAN!!!!!!

July 14, 2008  09:16 AM ET

The management has really screwed themselves over on this.

First, they pressured him into making a decision on whether to retire or not.

Second, when he has attempted to make contract with the organization they have been very difficult to work with.

Third, they have now attempted to avoid the situation by trying to get him to stay retired.

Fourth, they have basically announced that if he comes back he will be the back-up.

Fifth, they have basically said they aren't getting any offers for him (yeah, right).

Sixth, If he comes back and does start as the back-up they have put a TON of pressure on Aaron Rodgers as the starting QB. Rodgers knows that the fans in Green Bay sure appear to want Favre back. As soon as Rodger's struggles the calls for Favre to play will start very very quickly.

At no time or place in this entire mess has the management of the Packer's done anything that could be considered in the best interest of the organization. No matter what they do know they will have a serious problem.

If they release Favre, he likely signs with the Vikings, a bad thing for GB.

If they trade him, they likely aren't going to get the draft pick they want, considering the salary a new franchise would have to pick up.

If they keep him on the roster, you have either jerked around Rodger's or you have the highest paid back-up QB in NFL History putting a ton of pressure on a young QB with no NFL starting experience.

I think the best bet is to trade him to an AFC team, but I'm not sure anyone wants to pick up the contract. Unless someone can agree to a deal where Favre renegotiates the contract and then gets traded, things don't look good for the management. If management somehow makes it out of this in something resembling one piece I will be shocked.

They can't have this guy sitting on a bench pulling down 12mil,and ruining the locker room.Trade him out of the confrence for a 2nd round pick and move on.Miami or K.C. would be best for the 'Pack for future picks because neither are good teams.K.C. still has no defence and not a lot of cash in Croyle(who didn;t exactly light it up in college) and Miami has a GM who loves old QB's,lost 6 games last year by an average of 3 points,a new owner(50% of team)and NO state income tax.The only person in Miami cringing at this deal is Dan Marino!
