Warriors OK with Ellis at the point

The team continues to make inquiries into acquiring a point guard, league sources said, though it appears unlikely that a big name like Chauncey Billups or Kirk Hinrich will be landing in Oakland soon. Indications are that the Warriors are intent on having Monta Ellis replace Baron Davis at the point and giving Ellis room to grow.

They better hope he grows quickly. If his court vision and ability to find teammates stays anywhere close to where it was before (granted he was a 2), the Warriors will have trouble. I love Ellis, but hes no pg.

The Warriors better have another plan. A good PG that is somewhat of a combo guy like Hinrich makes the most sense.

July 14, 2008  10:01 AM ET

Pretty good at the 2 but at point I don't think so..

July 14, 2008  10:12 AM ET

Trade harrington for hinrich

July 14, 2008  10:57 AM ET

Ellis is young and smart. He will probably experience some growing pains at the point, but the move makes more since than anything else.

July 14, 2008  10:57 AM ET

there will be some slight drop off at the position

July 14, 2008  10:58 AM ET

Moving Ellis to the point will also allow the Warriors to keep the rest of the core intact.

July 14, 2008  11:38 AM ET

Not sure of his prior point play-
but 'converting' a shooter to a distributer is not a simple prospect.

what successful team - as of late- has this strategy worked for ?
I can't think of one

July 14, 2008  11:48 AM ET

i was hoping the warriors would work a deal 2 get Mr. Big flop billups!

July 14, 2008  11:53 AM ET

The move makes sense to keep the core in tact like Hllywd said, but this kid is going to have some serious growing pains as he transitions to the position. The Warriors better go out and get a veteran point guard that can teach the position to Ellis and play big minutes when necessary.

July 14, 2008  12:03 PM ET

Didnt they learn this when they had Larry Hughes play the point and he just couldnt do it. This could destroy a bright young career, hopefully they get there head on straight.

July 14, 2008  12:07 PM ET

he'll be better in sg for gsw but this will be

July 14, 2008  12:47 PM ET

Sure, Nellie wants to destroy a scoring 2-guard, by all means do it. He needs to check how many assists GSW had with Ellis at the ball

July 14, 2008  02:46 PM ET

They don't need a hinrich or felton, what they need is a solid backup, say Dooling.....

July 14, 2008  02:50 PM ET

why not go after Hinrich or try to get Ridnour away from the team that has no name, formerly the sonics

July 14, 2008  02:58 PM ET

Ridnour would be a perfect fit actually...

July 14, 2008  03:30 PM ET

Ellis would be okay aas #1 PG. Marco Belineli would be a good back up PG. He is proving he could play the point in the summer league. He is probably the italian Magic Johnson.. Nellie should give him a cnhance in the regular season.

July 14, 2008  04:59 PM ET

Lmao the Italian Magic Johnson? No sir, make a different comparison. Marco isn't even in the same galaxy as Magic. What are you trying to compare, the height? Idk, just that isn't a good comparison IMO.

Anyway, Ellis needs to stay there, let him be an extra PG or an emergency. Pick up, like others said, Hinrich or Ridnour. I bet you could get Ridnour for say...a sign-and-trade of Kelenna Azubuike and a future pick? He would be a good fit for them.

July 14, 2008  05:26 PM ET

Philly tried to convert Iverson into a PG too. Results werent favorable.

A few threads ago, someone compared Magic to Odom. Now you have a Magic comparison to Marco Bellineli? Seriously folks, how about some respect for what Magic has accomplished! And im not even a Laker fan.
