Boston still looking at Teixeira

The Red Sox have talked to the Braves about free-agent-to-be first baseman Mark Teixeira, and more conversations are likely to take place before the July 31 trading deadline, according to well-placed major league sources. Peter Gammons was the first to report that the talks had taken place, and it is true that the Braves asked for first baseman Kevin Youkilis and Craig Hansen in return. Would the Sox make that deal? Not at the moment, but the message they left with the Braves was keep us in mind. The Braves, according to those sources, have their doubts that the Sox would move Youkilis, because of his ability to play both first and third and his defensive skills at both positions. And if David Ortiz proves he's healthy on his rehab assignment, the Sox may hold off on any pursuit of Teixeira until after the season, when he's a free agent.

The Braves are ONLY 6.5 games out. Yes, only. There pitching will get a boost from the return of Soriano, Hampton (that is, until he pulls a muscle in his pinky toe) and maybe Glavine. Is Maddux a possibility? I'm a sentimental sort but probably not. PItching hasn't really been our problem. What the Braves need is Xavier Nady. If the Mets or Phillys get him it's all over for the Braves. Nady is this year's Braves killer. The time is now for the Braves. Chipper, Bobby, Glav and Smoltz are the only pieces left of a once great dynasty. And before you give me the token "But they only one one WS..." crap, as I die hard, it was something to watch and be apart of. Most sports fans will never be apart of something that great. So Frank (Wren), GO GET NADY!

You don't lose much with Youk. You get an extra major league pitcher. I'm not sure Boston will do it. Youkilis is really popular with the fans even if he isn't so popular with the other players.

You can't afford Nady with the coast teams sniffing around.

I still wouldn't be surprised to see this deal go though.

this trade would certainly not knock the braves out of the playoffs and would be much better than 2 comp. picks. youk hits for a far better average and hansen would instantly help the bullpen and neither would be gone after the year, braves could sign youk long term and chipper, he, and mcCann is a nice middle of the order. they could then look into jason bay or nady(as mentioned above). i'd offer a package of lillbridge(blocked by yunel escobar), brandon jones(guy from pirates takes his spot in left), and a good but not great pitching prospect

as a braves fan though, this deal would be so amazing

i'm a sox fan, and i have mized feeling about this trade...

first off, i love youkilis, he plays the game as hard as anyone else in the majors, secondly, hansen is one of out top prospects, even if he hasn't been living up to the hype. and teixeira seems to be somewhat declining powerwise

though, the thought of having ortiz, rameriz, teixeira, drew batting 3-6 is mind boggeling, plus teixeira is, like youkilis, a gold glove caliber 1st basement....

i'm still iffy

i have mixed feelings*

Why would you trade away a guy like Youk? Surely not. He's as much of a gamer as they get. Haven't him and Drew just carried that team for the last month?

July 16, 2008  12:06 AM ET

it's basically been only youk, drew, and pedroia for the last month

they should wait till teixeira becomes a free agent n sign him, let lowell go, move youk to 3rd n have teixiera at 1st n dat way u dont lose youk and lowell could sign but he would be a back up
