Another NBA ref under scrutiny

Tim Donaghy telephoned a fellow NBA referee 134 times during the period when he was betting on NBA games, according to a report yesterday, a connection that appears to validate concerns that Donaghy might not have been the only referee involved in gambling. Fox News New York, citing court documents and phone records it obtained, reported that Donaghy made the calls to referee Scott Foster between October 2006 and April 2007. The report provided no indication on the nature of the calls between Donaghy and Foster. But it noted that the only person the disgraced referee telephoned more frequently than Foster was Thomas Martino, one of two high school friends who wagered with the information Donaghy provided. Those calls between Donaghy and Foster, according to the report, occurred before and after 54 of the 57 games Donaghy officiated in that time span.

yeah Stern just an isolated rogue employee. this is getting worse each passing day. what is next they will change their name from NBA to the National Basketball Entertainment ( NBE ). This reminds me of the controversy years ago if the WWE was fake or real. this is way things are going. not good Stern not good at all.

Im not surprised..This is awful..

July 15, 2008  08:31 AM ET

the only thing the NBA can do is have an INDEPENDANT investigation.
and see where it goes-

if it goes deep- REALLY not good
if it is 1-2 rouge refs - the scandal will pass-

but it MUST be an independant investigation......

July 15, 2008  08:59 AM ET

I'm sure it's all just a big coincidence.......

Do some basic statistical analysis of fouls during the regular season and during the playoffs. Surprise, surprise, the foul differential between the marquis teams or those teams with players the NBA wants to feature is not only often statisitically significant, it's sometimes mind-boggling. I.e., many times it would be almost mathematically impossible for the foul differential to happen simply by chance. And this is after normalizing for seasonal averages, personnel, minutes played, etc. Ergo, unless the laws of statistics have changed recently, there's "something" driving the foul discrepancy. I wonder what that could be. Perhaps the NBA has an answer for us. Or maybe a PhD statistician should do a full-blown study or employ high-level data mining techniques to drill into what's going on.

This is going to turn into the worst cover up in sports history. I could care less about the refs, what I'm excited to see is the players, owners, politicians, and mafia guys that go down with this rotten story.
Remember the steroids scandal, MLB was trying to sell it as a couple of rogue dudes hitting the juice in the gym, not the actual 90% that were / are.

Coincidence? I think not. Instead of trying to sweep Donaghy's claims under the rug, David Stern should launch a full scale investigation into NBA officiating practices. Otherwise, it's going to blow up in his face. It is only a matter of time before a broke Donaghy is offered money to write a book.

Oh no... Donaghy and Foster may have been friends... can you imagine that a criminal like Donaghy may have actually had one friend he talked to on a regular basis... Thats just sick, evil almost...

July 15, 2008  10:49 AM ET

My question is if Donaghy lacks in credibility, why are they taking what he says so seriously? I smell a rat and I think that there will be more refs joining Donaghy..I guess Donaghy saying hes not going down alone..The NBA knows what this man says has a lil "truth" to it..I've seen some suspect games myself..This is crazy..

I think the best referee all time in the NBA was (I hope I got his name right) Mendy Rudolph - above reproach, called a consistent game, and players and coaches respected him !!!

July 15, 2008  11:08 AM ET

Not surprised at all.

Ohhh 134 phone calls, so that is about 20 calls/month or less than once a day. You think they might have worked together and were working out where to go eat, movie to see, "you getting a cab to the arena...Can I get a ride to the airport?" that sort of stuff? Tru Reporting is a thing of the past.

I wonder who it is...I hope its Joe Crawford

...take the Lakers by 8 and the Warriors giving 4. I'm working that game tonight ;)

I love seeing the uppity stern get what he deserves...this guy is smug and irritating...does he really believe that we would think that old Tim was the only one??...we all know that there were lies told to us by our government regarding the Iraq war....we all know that boxing is fixed....we all know that there are more ref's who have point shaved and bet on games than old Tim......the NBA has been fixed for years...come on ..a player or coach or even an owner will be severely fined if they criticize the ref's...even if their right about the criticism...only stern knows...but soon...we will all know

Did the league actually think this was isolated to one and only one ref..... What is the color of the sky in their world?????
