The Fire issued an apology Monday from Cuauhtemoc Blanco for his actions in a U.S. Open Cup game against D.C. United on July 8. "I sincerely regret my inappropriate actions during the game. ... I disappointed my Fire teammates and coaches, D.C. United players and staff, Major League Soccer, the U.S. Soccer Federation and all our fans. I'm truly sorry." United said Blanco hit Clyde Simms in the stomach, poked him in the eye and head-butted a team employee. A United spokesman said the incidents were caught on tape and would be reviewed by MLS and the USSF, which runs the Open Cup. Blanco will miss an Open Cup game due to a red card he received in the match. Because the Fire was eliminated from the tournament, the Fire's next Open Cup game will take place in 2009. The USSF hasn't announced whether Blanco will be suspended beyond one game.

Oh and I'm sure he really really means that. What a joke....

July 15, 2008  08:50 AM ET

basically what you are saying is there is nothing the guy can do to make up for it?? quite simply you are the joke....

this guy has come to the US and has bridged the gap between the Fire and the Mexican population... he's done NUMEROUS charity events, including the recent "make a wish" segment... he has been a positive signing for the Fire and for the MLS, and this is his first incident in the MLS....

get over yourself..

I swear agents have a template apology speech that they had to players...

I sincerely regret my inappropriate actions (during game/in my personal life). ... I disappointed my (insert team name here) teammates and coaches, and staff, (insert league), and all our fans. I'm truly sorry.

Anyone who acts mad about this apology is an idiot. Of course he isn't sorry, why are you acting surprised that they released a cliche apology? And so what if he isn't sorry... thats Blanco and if you expected anything else, you're a fool. Face it, we love to hate this guy - and it is for things like this. Get on with your life. The only reason why you want him suspended is because he is so good, not because you are outraged at his actions.

July 15, 2008  09:49 AM ET

Punched him in the stomach, poked him in the eyes, pulled his hair and used a plunger on his forehead....This 3 STOOGES anticts have to stop.... He is just a victim of circumstance. Zoytenly!

I love that the MLS has someone I can dislike now. Its like Barry Bonds without the roids, I tell you. Any better and he would have a vaudevillian mustachio he would devilishly curl while doing these bad things while telling Clyde Simms he drank his milkshake.

July 15, 2008  10:52 AM ET

i couldnt care less about his antics in previous leagues and previous teams... as soon as he donned the Fire jersey he is clean of sins.... this incident was his first in this league... a league where he is CONSTANTLY hacked ... he's kept his cool until now... he'll serve his suspension and pay his fine....

funny this type of stuff happens all the time (maybe not a fist to the side, but fights and cheap shots) yet he gets pinned with the "thug" tag when others are kindly looked over....former years of bitterness and bias is what im seeing

July 15, 2008  11:28 AM ET

Is it really Cuauhtemoc Blanco apologizing? Or, is that the Fire management's attempt at damage control?

July 15, 2008  12:18 PM ET

> I love that the MLS has someone I can dislike now. <

So, you support any team that Carlos Ruiz plays on? That little fish is way more aggravating to me than Blanco. Sure, Blanco is a hot head, but he's bounced his way through at least two World Cups and the only respect he gets from MLS defenders is repeated testing of his shin guards.

However, he's gotta have more self-control than to punch players -- and staff should never enter the equation. USSF should

July 15, 2008  12:21 PM ET

. . . USSF should come down hard on him for this. Can they ban him from MLS games as punishment? They could give him a four game USOC ban. That could last through 2011!

July 15, 2008  12:31 PM ET

All I can say is typical Blanco, if he's not diving he is fighting.

July 15, 2008  12:44 PM ET

soundersforlife- lol, wouldnt that be a funny sight to see him banned that long (to 2011)....

wont happen tho... even if it a 4 game ban, its the freaking USOC ... the fire almost always come out playing for this tourny... anyhow, Blanco plays up through the 09' season... after that he may not even be on the fire's squad anymore... who knows what could occur

What is wrong with you Cuauhte-schmuck Blanco supporters? Yes this guy is a talented player, but he also one of the best examples of the worst part of soccer. He is the worst, blatant cheater in the game. And for any of you that say that intentionally diving whenever getting breathed on and then crying about it is just part of the game, you need to grow up and stop being such ****. There is a reason he got fouled more than anyone else in MLS last year. I have a little secret for you, its not because of his skill.
I have nothing against Chicago as a team, but this guy is infuriating to watch because he gives the game a bad name. All punishment that he receives is deserved and maybe he will stop cheapshotting people too.

July 15, 2008  01:44 PM ET

Honestly he needs to be punished in the competition that he commited the infractions in. I dont have much of a problem with poking someone in the side what I think he needs to answer for is the headbutt on an official.

Oh and get over the "he get's hacked all the time, blah blah blah crap." He's been a hothead his entire career and people hate him for it. THAT is the reason people are dont hold anything back when tackling him and personally I couldnt care less if they kept laying into him. And as much as people "hack" at him, he dives a lot more. Generally he's a typical Mexican player, thinks he's god, dives, and looses his temper anytime anyone does anything to him.

Oh and congrats to the U-20's for continuing the dominance over our lesser neighbors with a 3-0 smashing of Mexico the other night.

I LOVE THIS GUY!! Blanco is the man. I'm so glad he and Beckham came to MLS. It's so much more fun to watch their teams play now. A punch to the ribs, foaming at the mouth - it's all part of what makes Blanco Blanco. He's entertaining for sure.

You got that right ~!! We have owned Mexico on all division even USMNT has owned Mexico in the last ten years!!

July 15, 2008  03:12 PM ET

bonerchild- clearly you havent watched any of his games this season...

when he first got here, yes, i agree he went down on the slightests of touches... and to tell you the truth i think that hurt the fire this season... it seems the refs got irritated with how foolish they were looking blowing those calls b/c they've missed MANY MANY blatant fouls this season...

Blanco is doing 100% better with not dropping... he's staying on his feet and attempting to continue the game.... now its apparent how much of a hack-fest it is when Blanco comes to town....

noone is defending his actions, we are simply defending the authenticity of his apology... while i cannot say if he truely meant it or not, i defend the fact that he's been a steller performer on and off the field.... he's done alot for the fire and more for this league then most.....

July 15, 2008  03:18 PM ET

let me point out that most of the Fire fans were tired of his antics of falling when touched.... we wanted him to play through it and show heart... there is no denying th fact he's done just that this season... he's the most fouled player in the MLS, having a huge chunk of clear fouls uncalled for last seasons shinnanigans.... in all honesty i think its warrented... i dont blame the refs for turning a blind eye to a foul once n' awhile to prove a point....

anyhow, like i said, noone's really defending his actions... this thread was simply about his apology not his actions
