Twins shopping Hernandez?
Posted: Tuesday July 15, 2008 07:11AM ET
It will be interesting whether the Twins try to package Michael Cuddyer and Livan Hernandez in a trade for a slugging third baseman before the July 31 deadline, saving $20 million in guaranteed money to Cuddyer and $2.5 million to Hernandez. Denard Span ($390,000) would replace Cuddyer in right field, and Francisco Liriano ($400,000) would replace Hernandez in the starting rotation. One problem, though: finding a team willing to take on the salaries. The Twins say they haven't had room for Liriano in the starting rotation.

Report Offensive CommentTwins fan - I actually much prefer the threads that are NOT about the Red Sox or Yankees.
Yeah, I'd be interested to know who they are looking at among 3rd basemen.
I'm surprised that they would want to move a veteran like Livan, and all his PO experience when they are only a couple of games back. I know he hasn't had a great year, but I thought he had pitched pretty well in his last 3-4 starts.

Report Offensive CommentWho would actually take Hernandez???? And how exactly does Cuddyer sweeten any deal....What exactly has he done??? Who is he?? The Twins might as well offer a few used batting practice balls and some of Joe Mauers used razors and club house towels...That would bascially be the same as offering Hernanzez and Cuddyer.

Report Offensive CommentThough I highly doubt the Twins will trade Hernandez with their postseason chances right now (especially after the Castillo debacle last season), I think the most likely scenarios would be to trade Hernandez and Cuddyer to either Colorado for Atkins and a minor leaguer or to Seattle for Beltre. The Twins were interested in Atkins in the offseason last year, so I would think they'd be on him again should it all come to that.
However, the overall most ideal situation I can think of would be to hold onto Hernandez and Cuddyer, bump Bass out of the bullpen and back into the minors (or release him, as I think he's out of options), bump Liriano into the bullpen and finish the season that way. Then, at the end of the season, let Hernandez walk and move Liriano to the rotation and bring up someone like Humber or maybe Mulvey to replace him in the bullpen. And while we're into shuffling things around, release Everett and Lamb and save a few bucks. Punto, Harris, Casilla and Buscher have proven they're skilled enough to handle the left side of the infield...
But please oh please, Mr. Smith...DON'T TRADE CUDDYER!!!!!!!

Report Offensive CommentThe Twins could pull a Tanya Harding / Nancy Kerrigan incident on Hernandez....that would open up a spot for Lariano... Because everyone in the league knows he has NO trade value...

Report Offensive CommentTwins Fan - I guess you are right on him being the most likely candidate. It just seems to me that Livan is the kind of guy you want around for a pennant race.

Report Offensive CommentLivan has the wins, but his ERA and BB ratio are both horrible. He is one bad start from becoming a glaring liability.
The Twins should definitely sell high now. The rotation is already solid and, very quietly, Francisco Liriano has been lights out in AAA (7-0 in his last 8 starts - 24 K's, 0 runs in his last 21 innings).
Oh, free advice: those of you playing fantasy baseball, check to see if Liriano's available on the waiver wire. You stand to benefit.

Report Offensive CommentI'd love to see the Twins get rid of Livan, he's a bum. Cuddy is a good player though but has been injured all season (see finger injury). I highly doubt the Twins get rid of Cuddy because Span has played well for 3 weeks. Not to mention I'm not sure who would be dumb enough to want Livan.

Report Offensive CommentThe Twins have to trade Hernandez for anything. He is due to make another $2 million dollars if he pitches 200 innings or more. Cuddy had a good year last year and should have some trade value. He is an above average defender with an excellent arm. I see why they want to trade him with Span hitting and playing as well as he has. I see the Twins ending up with either Beltre or Atkins. Both teams are selling right now and Hernandez is done after this year. Beltre is overpaid and that would help Seattle clear some money to sign free agents this offseason.

Report Offensive CommentI think the thing people are missing here is that Cuddy is a Gardy guy. The manager really likes Cuddy and I think they'll have a hard time talking Gardy into trading him. Not that Gardy has the final say in it but I'm sure he has a lot of influence.

Report Offensive CommentIs Liriano even ready to go yet? I always thought he would be a better closer after the surgery. I'm not saying trade Joe Nathan but they could sure get a lot for him. I would love to see them make a push to get Beltre from Seattle but you hardly ever see the Twins make a splash.
