Mets may pass on deadline deals

The Mets are more seriously considering promoting from within (Fernando Martinez for the outfield, Jon Niese for the rotation, Bobby Parnell or Eddie Kunz if a bullpen arm is needed) then making a trade between now and the July 31 deadline, Omar Minaya told The Post yesterday. The Mets are finding the asking prices for relievers they have interest in, such as Colorado's Brian Fuentes, to be too steep. Because the Mets are more fixated on a righty-hitting outfielder, they have substantially cooled on Seattle's Raul Ibanez, although the organization's top executives like him a great deal. Because they are unwilling to give up a big-time package, Colorado's Matt Holliday can be scratched off the list, and, unless the prices fall substantially, so can Pittsburgh's Xavier Nady.

Haven't they just won 9 in a row? Maybe they realise they actually can be pretty good.

Selling teams will have to come down on the asking prices or no one is going to be making moves.

I agree with that CF2. I don't think many teams right now are willing to pay ridiculous prices for the names being shopped.

July 15, 2008  10:57 AM ET

The Mets already made the best move they could Manuel for Randolph !!!

July 15, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Maybe if the Mets could pull off a great deal like they did when they traded Kazmir for Victor Zambrano......they would consider a deal.......otherwise.....

Kind of like Mulder for Haren and Calero, eh?

July 15, 2008  11:55 AM ET

What, is this actual common sense I hear coming from Omar Minaya??

Wow, there IS a god, after all...

July 15, 2008  12:34 PM ET

This is actually sounding likehe might be getting a clue. I am tired of trading our you th for 40 yr olds who cant last a season!

July 15, 2008  01:21 PM ET

The only trade I would consider is for Nady, and I would not give up a lot for him. The Mets will need OF help later in the seson and Nady does fit that bill. But to gut the farm for him would be dumber than the Mets signing Bonds to replace Alou!

The Mets have won 9 straight and the back-up players have been great during the streak.....But they are back-up players for a reason. It's unlikely that Tattis, Easly, and Chavez will stay this hot.
If and when the price comes down, I'd make a move for Nady. Holiday's numbers are a product of Coors field.

Kind of, but at least Mulder WAS a good #1 type starter. Zambrano was never anything close to that.

That is such a sore spot for us mets fans. Awful. AWFUL!

Field Marshall Sunny Day | 07/15/08, 11:23 AM

Sorry, FMSD, I didn't mean to bring up a sore subject......

July 15, 2008  02:58 PM ET

They've got nothing to trade. They gave it up already for Santana.

July 15, 2008  04:50 PM ET

It's about time the Mets started building on their youth instead of on someone else's gariatric ward. Don't worry, Omar, even if this doesn't end up as a playoof season, with the young prospects in - the Mets will be a great team for many years to come. Just imagine Wright and Reyes times 3 or 4.

The Mets have won 9 straight

Taking three of four at Philly was pretty good, but the last six wins have been at home against the Giants and Rockies. Don't go wetting your panties and planning for the post season just yet. Go Marlins.

LOL! That's pretty funny, Wrigley........totally fitting......

July 16, 2008  07:50 AM ET

The Mets don't need to make any moves... like Minaya said... promote from within, and continue to platoon left field and second base. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Giving up the farm (like they did for Santana) just isn't worth it.

The Mets are in a bad spot. If they stand pat, they still probably wont make the playoffs. If the make a move, they deplete the future, and probably wont make the playoffs a couple years from now.
