Nine teams interested in Garcia

The Yankees and Mets are among at least nine teams monitoring the progress of Freddy Garcia as he intensifies his workouts to come back from shoulder surgery. Garcia will begin throwing breaking balls off the mound this week in Miami, according to one of his agents, Ed Greenberg, and as long he avoids setbacks the plan is to schedule a showcase for teams to judge his abilities. Up until this point, Garcia has only thrown changeups and fastballs off the rubber, and Greenberg said his fastball has ranged from 84-87 mph. Greenberg said his client has suffered no pain or setbacks. Besides the Yanks and Mets, the Astros, Rangers, Royals, Red Sox, Phillies, Tigers and White Sox are keeping steady tabs on Garcia, who last pitched in the majors on June 8, 2007. Greenberg said that he does not anticipate allowing a club to negotiate a 2009 option.

I would be surprised if he didn't have 30 teams watching him.

Please God no

PLEASE dont come back to Philly! I'd rather have J.A. Happ pitching than him!

Freddy is gonna be in demand. But before teams move so quickly, please review his stats from last year....

Who cares about the warning signs. The tigers will get him, realize he can't throw within a 5 foot radius of the strike zone, and then send him to play A ball. He and Dontrelle could then learn new pitching mechanics together.

How much weight has he packed on? That's the biggest sign to look for....

July 15, 2008  09:41 AM ET

I don't think I want another pitcher with shoulder issues in St Louis.

July 15, 2008  09:53 AM ET

Weight smeight....he couldn't hit 82 last year and had no movement.

July 15, 2008  10:45 AM ET

Nice teams are interested? Make that nine suckers.

July 15, 2008  10:47 AM ET

Me thinks, come October, Garcia will still not have throw a pitch in a major league game this year !!!

July 15, 2008  11:06 AM ET

I didn't say I want him; but, you have to give him a look. You never know.

Amazing how a guy who, prior to his injury, was a consistent innings-eater with a career ERA right at 4, could have to audition for teams now.

If he's healthy and lands with the right team, he may turn out to be the steal of the year.

July 15, 2008  12:00 PM ET

He is auditioning to get the bidding started...

He's only had one injury in his career, they need people with more DL experience.

July 15, 2008  01:29 PM ET

His Visa was reauthorized July 1.

Freddy "chesseburger" Garcia? There I went there - stewie.

July 15, 2008  02:42 PM ET

The Mets need to pick up one more starter to protect themselves in case Pedro comes down with injury but I am not so sure that Freddy is the guy.

You're right CF2, he could be worth a look. Nobody wanted Kyle Lohse during Spring training, either.
